Has anyone considered a remote oil filter for their Avy? :0:
I had one on my ZR2 and Envoy. Boy, it sure make changing the oil filter a snap. Didn't even get my hands oily. I'm sure that Gandolphxx can come up with a web site for an after-market remote oil filter. He is the man! ;D ;D ;D The question would be, where's a perfect spot to install the filter? The ideal position of the filter, for removal, would be horizontal. Just crack that baby a half turn, let it drain, then spin it off . If you had that and a drain valve on the oil pan, that would be SWEET. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I installed a dual remote filter set-up a few years ago on a street rod I was building. I believe it was from Transgo. Your right, it made oil changes real easy. I would imagine they are still available at the high performance car shops. I installed mine so that the filter hung vertically. I polished it and used an fittings (the real ones) and steel braid covered hp hose. Looked WAY cool. It wasn't cheap.?

Amsoil makes a couple of different remote oil filter systems. They are excellent, but pricey.See www.amsoil.com

J.C.Whitney sells the Permacool system(not nearly the quality of Amsoil's).Another advantage to these setups is that you increase the amount of oil and use larger filters(though the Av engines already have large oil capacities).

Well, I went to install my Permacool remote oil adapter stystem tonight. Got all the hose routed, dual filter adapter mounted, and took off the oil fliter so I could srcew in the remote unit adapter. And the stupid thing was to larger in diameter. It wouldn't even screw in. Took it all out and I'm back to the search for a remote adapter plate.

BTW, the Fram oil drain plug (SD-4) fits right in. At least I'll be able to capture all the draining oil via oil drain instead of having it run down on to my skid plate.

Which engine do you have? The Fram folks say they don't have an oil drain for the 5.3L(I emailed them AND the Fram catalogue says no).

???

5.3L. I picked it up at Wal-mart. They had a list but no 02 model year vehicles, so i cross-referenced every truck/suv since 99 that had the 4.8, 5.3, and 6.0. Everything said SD-4.

I have been looking into dual remote filters and could not find a place to mount it under the hood. Amsoil's suggested that I mount in horizontally back behind the transfer case. (I have a K1500). The hoses would be about 5ft and hold additional qt or more of oil.

The location is easy to get to and mount and to change the filters. My only concern is that per Amsoil you are to change the filters twice as often as the oil but with the filters that low won't all (most?) of the oil drain out when I change the filters. I would like to find a place under the hood higher than the drain plug to mount the filters or in your case the single filter.

Jst4F, have you tried mounting the adapter that turns on to the stock oil filter location yet? Or did Amsoil say theirs will fit for sure? I'm still looking for one that will work. I'm about ready to take the permacool adapter into a machince shop and have them grind down some of the outer edge.

I'm going to mount mine on the passenger side, to the frame, vertical position, about in line with the passenger front door. Man, those hoses are long! I'll need to start buying oil by the semi load!

Okiesnake, thanks for the reminder. And nice pictures on your car.

Amsoil swears that their adpter will fit on the stock oil filter location without modification. I decided to first convert to AMSOIL syn using their regular spin-on filter and then add the dual remote filters at the first change of the syn oil. So I have time to plan it all out and ask lots of questions.

I found an Amsoil dealer that has been very helpful. His website is:

I just installed the AMSOIL Duel Remote Oil Filters. The p/n installed is BMK-13 with filters BE-90 and SDF-13. I also switched over to AMSOIL synthetic 0W-30 Series 2000. This oil is good for 25k miles or 1 year. The remote filter kit came with everything needed to install except some clamps for the hoses to prevent chaffing. The kit comes with various size adapters to fit the origional filter mounting pad. I mounted the filter mount on the right hand frame below the front passanger door. When doing it this way I recomend making a cover to protect the filters especially if the truck will be driven off road or in deep snow.
This is a good web site for information on the system. www.amsoil.com/products/bf.html

Okiesnake, How do you change that oil filter and keep your engine compartment cleaner than a hospitals operating room?? :)

My last truck had a remote mount horizontal filter up front under the radiator.... I like it for draining, but I also like to fill the new filter before installing it. That was a bit of a pain to do.

When I crawled under the Av last week to change the oild, I was so happy to see a vertical filter........ until I got about one and a half turns out on it, and the floodgates of hell rained down upon me. It was a bit of a PITA trying to get the filter off with hot oil dripping down it. (yeah, shoulda waited longer) Filling and installation of a new filter made up for the initial spillage though.

Can't decide which I like better...

marc_w, I learned this trick when I was changing oil in the big diesels. Take an ice pick, scratch awl or sharp phillips screw driver and punch a hole in the bottom of the filter. Let drain out before you loosen it and it won't be as messy. Just make sure you have the correct replacement before you ruin the old filter!

What wyoav said is very true and works well for the AV. One other hint...after you have punched a hole in the filter....loosen it just enough to relieve the vacuum and it will drain out much better, quicker and more completely. Don't loosen it enough that it starts running down the side or you defeat the whole purpose of punching the hole. Just did this over the weekend so I know! ;)

Another good technique, that aVOLanche put me onto is using an empty plastic coke bottle. Cut it in-half and use the bottom half like a boot or mitt to grab the filter and finish untwisting off the base. The plastic coke bottle half collects the oil that drips out and down the sides of the filter. ;D

More than one way to skin a cat!! :0:

Stormn, How about posting some pictures of the final installation?

jst4f,
once I get the skid plate made to protect the filters I will take some pictures and post them. I will also show the hose routing.

STORMN

Hi,

I am was intereted in the topic for the remote oil filter and I was following the discussion. Has anybody done it beside stormn?

have you guys considered the motorized pump for removing oil from the dipstick?

Have any body seen the remote hose from the jabsco, where you put a hose from the oil drain and placed the other end in a more convineiet place. Then you can combine it with a pump to drain the oil?

Well, I got my Dual Remote Oil Filter installed. ?It turns out that the Perma-Cool universal spin on adaptor is the unit the fits the 5.3L engine.

I ended up mounting my dual oil filters on the inside of the frame, under the passanger door area. ?I thought that area gave me the best access to them when it comes time to change the oil. ?And it has decent protection from objects that I might be driving over. ?Or at least the object will have to take out my torsion bar, Y-pipe and some of the frame before it gets to my filters.

Pictures and part numbers are on my web site. ?Just follow the AV links. ?I'll be adding some more pictures of the mounting position the next time I change my oil.
