I'd like to know about the situation with the remote start also. I'm worried about the onstar and things like that interferring.

when i was ordering mine, i was asked if i had on-star and when i said yes they proceeded with a different part number and starter unit... so make sure you get one that's compatable... cause it looks like they have to find a starter that runs on different channel.

i have had a starter in my av since i got it a year ago and never had anything interfere. i have a two way pager remote. works great, through buildings and long distance.

What kind of money are we talking about for the unit and for installation? Also did you'll buy then online? It would be great to warn it up before getting in.
Thanks in advance

Hey Guys
I have had one in my A/V since it was new, It it the best thing going. The only thing I recommend it a good expearienced installer, Tapping into a wrong wire could be devestating. On most GMs a starter needs a extra module to tie it in to the trucks computor. Im useing Astrostart

I also have a 2 way alarm with remote start. It took several trips to Circuit City to get everything right. There are many unique problems with the Avalanche. I started with the starter only, then got tired of 2 remotes. Luckily, the remote starter and the alarm are both from DEI, so they swapped parts out and only charged me for the extra alarm stuff. I really like the 2 way feature, lets me know what is going on. The range is awesome, I can start my truck from inside several layers of brick and concrete, and the signal has to pass through our server room, and I am up 3 stories. They needed an additional part because of the special ignition system we have, but it is worth it. With automatic climate control, things are comfy when I get in. The only thing addition I want to do is figure out how to turn the rear window and mirror defroster on and the heated seats. This is made difficult by not being tradional relays and switches, but using the data bus system.

What RDSIGN said :D
Get somebody who does these all of the time. You are going to find that the cost of the unit is only about 1/3 of the total cost.
There are extra parts required (and time) to deal with all the GM security features. This is not an AV thing, it is a GM thing. I used to have a list of them but they are gone now. The only problem I've had (if you can call it that) is that if I started with the remote, when I get in and insert the guy and backout, the overhead interior lights come on for a couple of seconds ??

The unit I am running is a Direkt Start.
PAid for the extra part and time to have the remote replace the door remote as well.

I love ? my remote start!!!!!!

Remote car starters are another place where you absolutely get what you pay for. ?Some shops in my area always advertise their "$99 special". ?Watch out for those guys. ?More headaches and problems then you'll ever want. ?One of the best brands out there today is DEI. ?DEI (Directed Electronics, Inc) make a whole family of products (kinda like GM has Chevy, etc they have Viper, Your Valet, etc.) ?I paid $190 for my DEI system at a trusted shop. ?I've had DEI remote starts on a total of 6 of my vehicles. ?That's about the only brand for me. ?They work great!

One word of caution if you're still under warrantee: ?Most dealerships will blame the remote starter for ANYTHING that goes wrong with your truck. ?My shop has gone so far as to call the service manager at the dealership and argue with them for me. The dealership **TRIED** to blame my ABS wheel sensor problems on my Grand Prix because "the remote start taps into sensitive factory electronics." ?I got fed up enough with that dealership that I told the guy that the problem must be due to my aftermarket floormats, and then left. ?Long story short, they car was fixed (I think there was a factory TSB about the problem), the dealership was wrong (VERY WRONG) and apologized. ?I don't talk to that manager anymore...

iron train,
Im a born gearhead so I plan on doing all my own mechanical work but electrical work is a mystery to me. The last time a put a stereo into a car (the only Ford I've ever owned) I shorted the cpu out and had to have the car towed to the shop. Thanks for the info on looking up topics.

I also luv my remote starter! I got a polar starter installed by a company that specalizes in installs of stereo's and starters. Pick a company that has been around for awhile and know what they r doing. I also got the 5th button set up to turn on my heated seats when I press the button , I have also heard of a member hooking one of the buttons to his power windows. I got mine installed (starter, door locks ,seat) for $350 CDN and would recomend this to everyone!

I also have a Astrostart in mine. I had the same model installed in a Silverado I had before the Avalanche.I didn't have any problems with the Silverado and haven't had any with the Avalanche.I have it setup so the head lights are not on while it is running on the remote start also I have it setup so I can turn on the rear window defogger and the heated mirrors with the remote.

Could you let me know how you went about remotely opearting the defroster, I understand relays, I am specifically asking about did you ground a wire, make a connection, or what and to what did you do it.

I have a 03 AV dealer installed DEI auto start system. The system is great!!! Its connected to the stock key FOB which is nice. A highlt recommended product. :)

Welcome to the site. I have the Viper alarm system with the remote start. I have had a form of the Viper in my last 6 cars. Right now there is one in the Av, and one in my wifes Explorer. (Yeah I know its a Ford :-[) Both trucks can be controlled off one remote. I love the system. The trick is to find a good installer.I have been dealing with the same installers now for about 9 years. The guy I used before this group actually went to work for DEI as a installer trainer. The system locks and unlocks the doors. Has glass break activation. Has a starter kill and mercury switches and shock sensors so if the truck is lifted or jacked, the alarm activates. It has switches mounted to the hood, so if they try to open the hood to cut the alarm, it goes off. Has proximity switches inside and out. With the prox. sensor inside, I could leave the windows down and if someone reches in, the alarm sounds. You can program it to operate the windows also. You use the remote to start the car, then when you go to get in, you deactivate the alarm. If you start the car then someone gets in and steps on the brake without inserting the key, the car shuts off. You keep the heat and defrosters on and when you go to your car after remote starting it, its warm. My wife loves the fact that snow and ice on the windshield are no longer a problem. In fact she wants her car kept outside so she can use the remote start. It's money well spent. The beat thing was someone was able to rip off my flag bowtie. To get those, you hardly have to touch the truck. The bottom line is if they really want the truck, they will get it.

I don't know how it is wired to remotely operate the defroster. I asked the installer if it could be done and he did it.

Does the Remote Start install retain all of your memory features that are triggered by the keyfobs and your perimeter lighting (puddle lamps, backup lamps, drl's ?) If so, what model is it?

I gave a remote starter to my brother for Christmas, hey Monsta if your on. He also has an AV. He and his family lives in Florida and we went down to visit during the holidays. We only stayed for (3) days and we spent (2) days trying to get the remote starter working!! I don't think my sister-in-law was too happy with me...

We got everything hooked up and the starter would turn the motor over but it wouldn't start. We thought we had a problem with getting the unit to "learn the tach" but it turned out that we did not have the Pass Mod set up correctly. The Pass Mod is an add on unit that allows the remote starter to start the truck without having the key in. It by passes the Pass Lock II theft protection system.

We got everything hooked up and the starter would turn the motor over but it wouldn't start. We thought we had a problem with getting the unit to "learn the tach". We tested our connections, double checked the wires we tapped into until we were out of ideas. So we road over to the Chevy dealer and talked to their "electronics expert".... The guy told us that it was impossible. There was no way a remote starter would work on that vehicle because of the PassLock II theft protection.

We knew the guy was full of stuff because we installed a Pass Mod which is an add on that is for by passing the PassLock II.

Well as it turned out, the ding dong was closer than we thought. We had the Pass Mod installed but it wasn't set up correctly. You have to take a resistance reading with an ohm meter and then refer to a chart that comes with the Pass Mod in order to set 10 dip switches to match the resistance reading from the PassLock II.

Once we got the correct setting, verummmm!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D

After we got back home, I couldn't help it. I had to order one for myself! It took me one full saturday to install it. ;)

Man, it is great to get in a nice warm vehicle first thing in the morning!!! (y)

The remote has a 4th button for trunk release or what ever. One of these days I want to do the power tail gate lock and use the 4th button for that

I've had my remote starter for 8 months now...one of my best mods (viper, DEI) I have had no problems with it cost about 300.00 installed with the Pass module, I would repeat the suggestions to have professionally installed, as Leather had posted before the 4th button (trunk release) on mine operates the windows, push once will vent both fron windows about 2 inches, hold down and they will go all the way down, set the alarm and they will both roll back up....added feature from inside, now the window buttons on both driver and passenger are express windows both up & down (y)

I don't disagree WVBubba. A self install is definately not for the faint of heart or electrically challanged, not to mention the time involved.

Growing up, we didn't have money to get anything fixed so if I
did figure out how to work on/repair things, they just didn't get done. Now I am an engineer by trade plus old habbits are hard to break. So I dove in!

I will say that since I had no working knowledge of the electrical system of the AV or the remote starter, it was a frustrating challenge. It onlt cost me $100 but I think I lost (3) more hairs! And if you could see my head you would know how serious that is!!!

By the way, WVBubba. We were up in your neck of the woods this past weekend. My son's Scout Troop does a ski trip every year and we make it a family thing. We all pilled in the van and headed up to WinterPlace for a couple days of skiing. Man did we pick a weekend! It was cold but the snow was great!! Had a blast!!!
