I've got an '02 Z-71 w/ about 27,000 mi. on it. At somewhere between 25,00 and 26,000 I started to get a lot of road noise and the Av began to get squirrely in the rain or whenever the tires got wet (even coming out of the car wash). It appears that the tires (which I hate anyway) have plenty. of tread left and are only now down to the first tread block that connects the outer 2 tread rows I rotated them, but there has been no difference. Has anyone else experienced this? When have some others gotten rid of these tires?

I have the same road noise in 02 Z 71 tires and I have 27000 mile also. Plenty or rubber on the tires. Looking into( Mich.)I had them on my last to two trucks and they were very quite.

friend i had the same thing happen to me i rotated i balanced i did every thing until one day at sears in agusta ga ,,,the man in charge looked at the balancer and said you have seperation on every tire wow shook me up..and loosened my wallet abuelito

Abuelito,

Thanks for the tip. Separation, huh? If I needed justification to swap these things, that'll do it. Bridgestone Revo's here I come.

friend it about drove me crazy,, but you need someone who will admit what is going on, the fellow ar sears in charge showed me the problem,, they were seperating only in spots and he showed me hard to see but when driving you can hear it, it was on all tires,,, he showed me a tire they had cut apart and you could see where it was seperating,, i dont know if you have a friend in tire business you can trust to talk to them about the tires seperating ok good luck abuelito

I had one of the Goodyear Wranglers that kept leaking about 5 psi/wk. I took it in to have it patched, and they couldnt find any nails, thorns, etc, but what they did find were about 4 splits and bubbles on the inside of the tire lining. When the tire was off the rim the tire guy showed me where you could push on the side wall where one of the cracks was and it was like "mush." I was shocked, but very lucky the tire didnt blow out. I bought the truck used w/33k miles, so I dont know if the road noise has increased over time.

I've got a little over 31,000 miles on my 02. I rotate the tires every 6,000 miles. Mine have gradually gotten more noisy than new but not objectionally so. As for the the no grip when wet---my tires have never had any traction in the wet. When it's on 2WD, I have to drive like I have an egg under my foot when going around corners on wet pavement . I usualy just punch it into AWD and charge on.

And I didn't find the Wrangler HPs that came stock with my '02 Z66 any better.

I had a "bumping" noise in the front left. Sounded like radial belt separation. Took it directly to Chevy (this was at about 33k). They said "We rotated it and it seemed to get better". Of course it did. It was not coming from the back, but since that's further, of course it's better.

I didn't screw around though, I have a 5-month old daughter. I needed it fixed.

After I rotate the tires the noise goes down for a couple weeks, and the truck seems really quiet.

Also, I am getting some hella tire wear on the inside edge of the tire. I have seen this on other Z-71's around town as well. Almost like the 4wd has too much camber in it.

the firestone wilderness le is no better if not worse. when i test drove my av with 28k on it, i thought at first that it had mud tires on because of the noise. honestly i thought there was a monster truck riding beside me at first. they had cupped badly, but the firestone dealer would not do anything about it saying only that the tires were'nt rotated as recommended by firestone although i had all service records documenting lproper rotation intervals. i only used them for 2 weeks while my new shoes were being shipped,.....what a difference.

oh yea, my wifes yukon has the same tires, and they are starting to do the same thing. guess the fight will be on again soon with the trash dealers, i meant firestone.

Okay so I had the Mich. they were fairly quite but not so good traction went up 2 sizes to Bridgestone Revo's there a little noisy but the ride has not changed and the traction is way better

I,m so glad someone brought this up!! I have an "03 Z71 with about 25K miles, 17" Goodyears, and have faithfully rotated the tires. I have kept my tire pressure around 35 pounds. While I was getting my windows tinted the other day, the shop owner (Phil) noticed that my tires were badly cupped on the inside. This was a shop where they also do tires and rims and I know them well. I had never noticed, but the inside 1-2 inches of all four tires were noticeably more worn than the rest of the tires. The rest of the tread looks almost new and now I know why! :0:

Anyway, I asked the Phil how he noticed the wear as it was kind of hard to see unless you are looking for it. He said he knew to look for it because most of the late model vehicles built on that chasis did the same thing. So my next stop was the Goodyear Tire Store down the street for their opinion. Sure enough, he confirmed the abnormal wear and that it was definitely caused by the truck's mechanics, not lack of maintenance. I then told him what Phil had said and said just between him and me, did he know anything about this problem with GM vehicles. He hesitated for a second and said that "yeah, it's a pretty well known problem with Avalanches, Yukons etc. :8:

My next stop was the Chevy Dealer where I was sure that they would deny ever seeing this problem. Well, of course they did. He did however kind of admit that because the wear was on all four tires with only 25K that the problem probably was that way from the beginning. He then asked me if I was going to ask for a new set of tires!! I told him that I should get a set as I tow a boat and would not want to have an accident due to tire failure. As there was obviously a problem that was present when I took delivery and that problem ruined a set of tires prematurely I feel they should fix the vehicles and give a new set of tires.

Anyway, I'm curious how many people have noticed this and whether anybody has gotten the dealers to do anything about the problem?

First thing I did when I got my AV was get rid of the Goodyears. They are unsafe. I don't think I have see so many people talk about hydroplaning on one tire than I have the Goodyears. Just go to tirerack.com and read the reviews - it's downright scary.

I changed my stock Z66 wheels and tires for new 20's and Kumho Ecsta STX's when I had around 700 miles.

Oh GREAT. Now I've got another issue to worry about with my new truck. I'm starting to wish I had gone for the crew cab silverado instead of the AV........... :cautious:

When I first bought my 02 I had the noise and the steering wheel had a little shimmy just a little . I took it back several times and they balanced about 3 times I did this so when I said if you can't fix it this time I want a new truck they sent it to have the front end looked at and realined where in the problem was solved , The left front was out . Then I went back to the dealer and told them I wanted 2 new tires on the front because they were dished . There was no arguement .They jacked another truck up and changed them out .

Just bought an '04 WBH Z66, it came with Goodyear Wrangler HP's on it. I do notice some road noise from the tires and I don't expect much service from these. I have found from purchasing several new Chevrolet trucks in the past few yrs that neither the Goodyears (typically out of round) nor the Generals (very poor wet traction) provide much service and that both of these tire brands will start showing tread seperation after around 17K miles. My recommendation for those of you who have 2WD Avalanche's for replacement of the stock P265/70R17 would be either the Michelin LTX M/S (quiet, good wet traction, excellent tread wear) or the Bridgestone Dueler HL (excellent tire as well). My two cents worth!!!!!

Thanks VREDAVALANCHE,

I have 48k on my Wrangler HPs. I have one tire on the front that has a slight bubble between the tread blocks on the side, and another tread block on the same tire is bubbling out. Now, I have it a few nasty potholes around the area, and this could have cause trauma to the tire.

I probably still have a good amount of tread left on them. I was looking at my spare to compare my tires to.

But basically I have never liked the HPs. One has been out of round for quite some time, and I'm fearing belt separation. They also didn't seem as quiet as they should be for semi-touring tires. I was basically looking at the Dueler HTs or Michelin LTXs. I think the Bridgestones HTs were cheaper than the HLs, but maybe I'll go with them instead.

I guess after reading some of these posts I should seriously consider 4-wheel alignment as well.
