I read a thread here earlier, which I since lost, about putting scanners in Avs. Someone rightly noted that laws in some states or smaller locales prohibit scanners in vehicles, with seizure of the equipment about the least of the penalties.

FWIW, in almost all cases, exceptions are made in those laws for licensed radio amateurs (hams). In other cases, there are other mitigating circumstances, including a letter of permission from your local police chief or sheriff.

Here's a link that covers scanner and radar detector laws:

Here is the permit for the permit for Michigan members for the scanner permit, www.mpscs.com/com-022.pdf

It is free, just fill it out and send it in. I takes a few weeks to get it back.

Technically they can't prohibit them due to some Federal Telecomm act..
The fact that a listener can't divulge info (some media exceptions) or use it unlawfully was the key factor.
But that MI law is still on their books and who want's to pay the bucks to fight it!

...`Cheaper to just get a Ham license!

I guess that is why I didn't hard wire my scanner, I use a portable that I can remove the battery pack from to get rid of the programed frequencies.
