Wow, I had seen a story on the SS over a year ago, and later heard that the concept of this got shutdown. I wonder why they changed there mind.

gm ticks me off. they had a killer SS concept truck with 480hp, so now they produce a different version of the c3? that is LAME! 345hp? how do you expect to beat dodges srt with 500hp or the lightning with 380hp and 450tq? go back to the drawing board. im one pissed of chevy lover. Alex

First the Torque Management System, and now an emasculated SS. What is going on with Chevrolets' Performance Division? ??? It's enough to make you long for the days of 11:1 compression, solid lifter cams and dual feed double pumpers (oh, wait, I already long for those days!). How many of you out there know what "breaker points" are?

As I've always stated, the best fix for a point distributor is to upgrade to an electronic trigger style. Breaker points are Model A technology, why would you want that on your vehicle? Electronic triggers offer you substantial improvements.

And BTW, you can set them with a match book cover! :rolleyes:

"Breaker points have not been used since the mid 70?s, but many older cars still have them. Because of the simplicity of breaker points, it is a good starting point in understanding the switching mechanism that controls the current flow through the coil. The points are made up of a fixed contact point and a movable contact point. The movable point is spring loaded and rides on a 4,6, or 8 lobe cam (depending on the number of cylinders). The points are located inside a distributor. As the engine rotates, the camshaft turns the distributor, which then opens and closes the breaker points as many as 15,000 to 25,000 times a minute. When the points are closed, current is allowed to flow through the ignition coil, thereby building a magnetic field around the windings. When the points are opened, they interrupt that current flow, thereby collapsing the magnetic field and releasing a high voltage surge. This high voltage enters the top of the distributor, where an ignition rotor distributes that voltage through a cap to the right spark plug at the right time. The distributor also contains a condenser that prevents arcing by absorbing excess current when the points open. The difficulty with the breaker point system is that the part that rubs against the cam wears. This wear causes a constant need for adjustment and eventual replacement. In the mid 70?s this problem was corrected through the use of solid state electronics and transistors as switching devices."

The breaker point question was only rhetorical. I don't miss points at all. I am just guessing that most on this board wouldn't know what a set looked like.

I don't miss having to spend hours fiddling around with tricked-out dual point distributors from Accel or building stock ones up with Chevs h/p parts. I've spent way too much time searching for dropped springs and changing advance weights. Before the aftermarket made custom weights we use to drill out the weights to lighten them or fill in the holes with lead to increase them. BEI's were a lot easier than hanging out at a buddys place who had a distributor machine all day. Besides lack of accuracy, one of the biggest drawbacks of the points was that they would "float" at high rpm.
You have to admit though, understanding spark timing and distributor blueprinting was really an art, and made a huge difference in how well you ran. Most hot-rodders were happy to bolt on a set of Hookers with Cherry bombs. A few added big Q-J spreadbores or a Holly on a dual-plane manifold and called it good (some even played with the jetting and pump shots). When it came to the advance curve, most had stopped modding by then and missed realizing huge gains because of it.

Funny you should ask, Goo! I actually looked up NB on a net atlas. Without getting out the Rand-McNally software it looked like a good 2000+ miles. When you put together a multiple day event I'll do my best to get there! I would love to see a S.A. show 'n shine, a night of cruisin', seeing the Alamo and other historical spots (not to mention the Tex-Mex food!). I could easily flyfish my way down and back. There is a lot of blue ribbon trout water between Seattle and San Antonio. :0:

There won't be any off-roading on our cruises. ?Unlike your area chapter with the Z71's lined up, we are mostly a Z66 type of crowd down here. ?I think we only had two 4x4's out of the 14 that showed up. ?gandolphxx can correct me if I am wrong. ?

Funny you should talk about a multi-day meet. ?Some members down here already mentioned they want a meet like the Wild West 2002 over there. ?I know El Paso and Dallas would like to work with me on organizing such a meet. ?I will keep everyone updated.
