ok i got 9005 silverstars in my lowbeams and i've have them in for maybe 3 months. heres what appened to them.

why it happened i have no idea, i did not touch the bulbs putting them in, i even wore cotton gloves. it looks like the coating from the inside in the tip actually melted and actually puddled up and melted through the bulb. one blew and the other one was on its way out.
thought i would give you guys a heads up check yours.
BTW its an 06 z71 5.3 without plastic.

I wonder if having the higher wattage lamps installed in the low beams is the cause for the meltdown that heyzipupyourfly experienced.  More heat would build up since they are on longer than the high beams.  Just thinkin' out loud here.

you may be right the lows have that little hood on them that could keep the heat near them

I think it depends on what model year you own as to whether you have a hood.  My '05 and my wife's '06 AV's neither have the hoods.

that does NOT look good... other than what has already been said, I'm not sure what the answer could be.  But I do know that the 9005 bulb is the highbeam bulb and not the low.  I didn't think you could put a 9005 bulb in the 9006 hole... modified bulb?  modified hole?  modified something that ya shouldn't have?  I'm thinking that unless you typoed 9005 when meaning to type 9006 this simply should not have happened.  It's one thing to happen to one bulb, but to both of them?  Now that's just odd!

If you indeed did put 9005 bulbs in the lows, would you mine me or anybody else asking why?
???

No, with some pursuasion, it is possible to put the 9005 into the 9006 lamp holders and vice versa.  A little on the stiff side, but can be done.

In looking at the posted pics, I started thinking... you said that "the coating from the inside in the tip actually melted and actually puddled up and melted through the bulb"... this simply is not possible by looking at your picks... if you look at where the power is connected to the bulb (angle is 90? facing DOWN in the locked position) if something were to have puddled on the inside of the bulb and melted through the glass, the hole would have been on the other side of the bulb than it is. NO?  To me it looks as if whatever was going on inside the bulb got so hot that it burnt a hole UPWARDS, not downwards.

Ok... my Q is still the same... why would one want to put a 9005 bulb in a 9006 hole?  They make higher than stock wattage bulbs for both.  Maybe I'm just not seeing the light here... pardon my weak pun.

Maybe an error, thinking smaller number (9005) means low beams and larger number (9006) means high beams.  Can be easily misconstrued.

no i meant to have high beam bulbs in low beam position, and the burn mark is not quite straight up but more to the inside of the vehicle on both side, and i do have those shields on my headlights.
guess lesson learned is not to put 9005 in place of 9006
autozone gave me a new set anyways so i didn't loose out on anything.

That definitely looks like the bulb melted... your hood is not melted?

I have a 2003 that uses 9011 "Halogen infrared" high beams. I ordered a set of 9012 low beams, that I had to modify the tabs to make it fit. The guy said that I could run highs in the low beam to put out more light, and that the high bulbs don't put out noticeably more heat. The glass on those SilverStar bulbs should not have melted... even if touched - cracked or broke, maybe.

Just my .02
