SilverStars Huge Disappointment :(

I have cheapo blue xenon low beams already. I then heard all the chat about silverstars. I bought some for the high beams. I installed one in the left hi beam and left the other stock. I have to say the difference was barely noticeable between the stock and new silverstar. Also the xenon bulb is much whiter! They are being returned tomorrow for some more cheapo xenon's! :C:

Don't know what to say guys. I'll admit I haven't put them in my Av but we did put a set in my wife's '97 Thunderbird and it made a huge difference in her car.

I know others have installed them and are happy. If you're looking for more light on the road I suggest upgrading your foglights to the 38 watt 899 bulbs. I can't recommend the 50 watt with a clear concious - although others are reporting no issues with them. However 38 watts versus 25 watts is a serious difference. I believe another trick is slightly adjusting your fog lamps so they point up a hair more sending more light forward.

Just an idea if you're looking for more light on the road and don't want to spend $500 to $800 for a HID kit...

Well, remember that you're replacing a 9011 bulb, which specs at 2300 lumens, with a 9005 bulb, which is only 1700 lumens. I'd expect that if you're disappointed with the SilverStar high beams, then you'll be disappointed with the "cheapo xenons" as well, if they're actually legal 9005 replacements.

Sten, if thats the case and the 9005 Silverstars were equal to the 9011 stock bulbs, then the correct 9011 Silverstars(if made) in theory should be much better then the stock? I just have to wait! Also huge difference in color of the silver star bulbs and xenon. Xenons are much whiter. I wonder in the 9006 bulbs will work as Hi beams, I give it a try tonight!

I went with the Xenon Blue on the 9005,9006 and fogs,,(899) and the DRL'S. The 9005-9006 cost me approx 22 bucks a pair as I recall on e-bay. I am satisfied with the light they produce. I have had several positive comments on them. They are much cheaper than the Silverstars. I don't know how long they will last. I have heard that they burn out much faster than the higher quality bulbs. I have had them in for about 3 months now.

Well, they aren't equal, and they aren't supposed to be. I found the SilverStar 9005s to be much whiter than stock, but not as bright overall. 9011 SilverStars, if they are made, would be whiter and as bright as stock.

That's probably a bad idea. I don't know if the connector will fit, but 9006 bulbs spec at 60 watts and 1000 lumens, which is far less than the 9005 bulbs you're already unhappy with. Your best bet is to compensate for the decreased brightness of legal 9005 bulbs by using something like the R&D Headlight Controller to keep the low beams on along with the highs.

Connectors for 9005 and 9006 is different. I just ordered Xenon 9005's and going line them up with the Silverstars to see which is better!

Pagemaster,
Sorry to hear of your unhappiness with the SilverStars. All I can say is to me they are a huge improvement over stock. At night, I can tell my lights are reflecting on all the signs from pretty far back in a pack of cars. The light is much whiter than stock in my opinion.

Sorry to hear about the disappointment too. I noticed I could see farther with my SilverStars.

I have the Silver Star lows (haven't done the highs yet) & the R&D controller for hi/lo. I notice a big difference (my opinion) between the colors when I now have both sets on. I agree that I wish there was a 9011 SilverStar, but there just is no such beast yet...you are probably sacrificing some brightness on the highs with any replacements that are not 9011, but I now want to get my colors to match. I believe that with the R&D controller, I compensate for the lost brightness. Now with the 4157NALL amber DRL, full time DRL re-wire, R&D hi/lo and 899 fogs all on at the same time >:D I just need to get some off road lights for my pushbar so I will be able to melt some paint off of someone's bumper at red lights. >:D

(y)I too installed the Silverstars both high and lo beam and I'm extremely pleased. Do a lot of boonie driving to get to the Interstate for my commute and they are great, a noticable difference to the stock!!! :B: :B: :B:

I've been happy with my Silverstar 9005/9006 combo. I will change to the 9011's hi-beams just as soon as/if they come out, though.

If you really would like to see if there is a substantial difference in your 9005 silverstar to the 9011 stock bulb, you have to do what I did. Keep the stock bulb in one side and silverstar in the other. I have to say it wasn't worth $50. I did the same with the cheapo xenon's and it was a day to night difference(pardon the pun!)

I have been very happy with the Xenon Blue's I did the Lows,Highs, Drl's and the fogs. Found most of them on E-bay. They cost substantially less than the silver stars by about 50%.
