1860-61--J.B.S. Todd, an early promoter of Dakota Territory and brother-in-law of Abraham Lincoln,

Not that I am aware of..

Imagine a trip from Dakota to DC in 1860, the RR didn't reach there until 10 years later.

There have also been several reports of wild temperature swings.  In 1943, Spearfish, South Dakota saw the temperature rise from four degrees below zero Fahrenheit to 45 degrees above in just two minutes.  An hour and a half later the temperature plunged back down to four below zero.  In 1916, the temperature at Browning, Montana went from 44 degrees to 56 below zero in one day.  That?s a one hundred degree drop!

You have to hand it to the explorers back in those days. They never new what was over the next mountain or across the next stream.

Sounds like Cathedral Spires National Landmark.  We visited the area a few years ago.
