So I did the steering wheel upgrade with the DIC controls enabled.  (Thanks sparqui!)  As expected, the stereo control buttons did not work.  But if I were to upgrade my single CD Head Unit to a TNR Nav unit, would I magically be able to use these buttons on the steering wheel?  I imagine that this would still be BCM related.  My guess is no, but I figure I'd put this out there...

You don't say what year but for 03 -06 power to the steering wheel controls comes from the BCM. Provided you installed all the wiring necessary you can have the BCM re programed at the dealer. They would have to call GM to get a VIC number for the reprograming, or you could obtain a vin number that had the same options that your truck has plus the steering controls and reprogram with the new Vin. Reprogramming with a different Vin is a little tricky but can be done. That's the way I added TPMS to my 03.

Thanks, Bill.  Yes, I do have an '03.  Would you mind me asking what the dealer charged for the reprogramming?  I was told once it could run up to 500.

My dealer did it for less than $100.  Some dealers will do it for even less.

Sorry I did not see this sooner.
to answer you question I have a Tech 2 and a friend that owns a shop has the programing software and for him this was a "lets see what we can learn project." That being said I have spoke to several of GM service managers in the my area and most said they would do it for an hours labor charge. Some also said they did not want to get involved.? :E: I guess it just tells you how much confidence they have in their techs.

I may have access to a Tech 2 soon.  Reprogramming the HU to relearn the VIN seams easy enough (as outlined in other posts), but I think I'll leave the BCM reprogramming to the pros, provided that they're willing (and able)!
