Stock off road

I know this might be the wrong place to ask about stock tires but any advice will be appreciated.

I'm thinking about buying an AV this month and some of the vehicles I have been looking at have the 20 inch tires. Are these any good off road? Or would the 17 inch be better? I won't be doing serious off roading but I do travel up a logging trail on my weekend property. It's fairly steep, often muddy, rutted and there are lots of smaller, though not small, rocks. Ground clearence is of some important to clear the rocks and debris that are sometimes on this trail. My current ride, an LR3 handles it pretty well, my friends Ridgeline less so. Thanks.

2 things to consider...1...will you be worried about getting those pretty 20"s dirty or damaged. 2. with a 17" wheel you will have more tire flew to absorb some of the shock og hitting a stump or rock. Another words the possibleity of bending or damanging a 20" is greater than a 17" I have 18" for this reason. I get a better look and ride on the street but when I go in the hunting club I am not as worried about damaging a wheel...what size wheels does you friend have?

You're probably better off with the 17's or with the 18's on the Z-71. ?Both would have more substantial sidewall and probably a better tread pattern suitable for rougher terrain. ?You would also be less likely to get your rims scuffed up.

If nothing else, get the 20's and buy a second set of 17's or 18's to use when you're making the rough trips (I've done this myself).

Oh, and if you need them, I do sell take-off wheels and tires (click the link in my signature).

My Lr3's are 18, my friends Ridgeline are 17 inch. As I mentioned it's just this one part of my property. And I also need something that handles the 155 mile highway drive to get there well, which is why I'm not gtting a Z-71. And I'm not up for changing back and forth...

AMV,
glad to see you made the decision to get the AV

You mentioned that you were  steering away from the Z71 because of the ride.... Although it doesn't have the autoride feature of the LTZ it is extremely smooth and comfortable. In addition you get a better offroad shock, a higher front bumper and a little extra undercarriage protection.... It comes stock with 17" wheels.

If you're gonna be in regular offroad situations, I'd be tempted to look closely at this package....

HOWEVER, any 4x4 AV could handle the terrain with the correct tires and wheels.... I would agree that 18 and under is smart!

Yeah I have taken my Z71 AV one several trips to the Fl Keys and to NC...both trips are about 8 hours for me......Z71 + the ride = the bomb >:D

First off.. friends don't let friends buy Ridgelines. :)

The other piece of advice I was going to throw into this is if you have off-road needs and don't get the Z71, I would make sure that you get a locking rear.

I agree with what they are saying just because it is a 4x4 doesn't mean the ride won't still be nice for those long trips and I would also agree with the idea of not going over 18'' wheels for your offroad trips.Good luck

Step away from the 20's  :kidding:

Seriously, from what you described, go with the 17's. I wouldn't go over the 18 mark and even that's a little too big for my comfort.

I have 16's and dont feel the least bit inadequate. >:D
off road rule of thumb tire size=> 2xrim dia

20's are cool if you are running 40's or better :D

I second that on the rule of thumb. Only reason I would actually go up to 18's is for a big brake kit.

I like your wheels too. But I think now that you have them, you need a big brake kit  >:D in bright green  :C:
hehe, I'd have to see that done first

I'd show you at Nationals but I'm not going to be home again to do it until November. Sorry. Don't worry though, I'll post picks when I do.

Ya, well, I need the money to pay for the mods. You know how it is. The truck, wife and dogs will be there, just not me  :(
