AV COMING IN THIS FRIDAY AND WILL JUNK THE GOODYEARS FOR MICHELIN CROSS TERRAINS, BUT IS THE STOCK RATING AN S OR H RATING ? I WILL ORDER TIRES RIGHT NOW.

Why are you junking them? After all you paid a lot for them. Did you find someone buying new truck "pulls"?

Speaking of tires...
here's a question. When the Firestone Steeltex's wear out, I'm going to get BFG All Terrain's. The Firestones are 245/75/16E, the BFG All Terrain's will be 265/75/16D. Even though the BFG's are a D rating, they are rated the same weight capacity as the E's.
My question is, will I need to have any of the cumputer settings changed?

You will be looking at just shy of a 4% difference. If I am not mistaken, you dealer can recalibrate the speedo for you. What they will charge is another matter.

You can click "modify" on your post in the right hand corner and fix any spelling errors, just FYI ;)

Say Durwin are you or have you ever been an english teacher - you gave me a bad case of deja vu - btw how's my spelling ;D

I have an 03 Avalanche 2500. I can't figure out why they put 245/75/16 tires on it from the factory ???. I think 265/75/16 would have been a better choice. The tires look too small. Maybe with the 2500's suspension, only 245s will fit if it is the stock height ???.

A number of things to consider:

1. Assuming that you have a 4x4 your front axle is 2" wider than the rear to accomodate the front differential and couplings - this limits the movement allowed in the front tires.

2. The Sub frame and fender configuration makes the above even more difficult.

3. The 245/75/16's fit the 6.5" rims that come standard - they are forged, not cast like the 1500 rims for higher strength, better offroad protection and the ability to handle 80 psi tire pressures which can be required with the 10 ply "E" rated tires and a full load in the rear.

While many have put 265/75/16's on these narrow rims, the crowning will reduce tire life, IMHO.

I replaced mine with 8" rims, run 265/70/16's and have a better ride, more control and a proper rim width fit + no rubbing. I would note that my front tires are not technically legal since the bizare "lips" don't cover them - they are there to make the truck legal in NY & NJ - fortunately I live in Texas.

Keep in mind that you will also have to have the PCM reset for the larger diameter - it affects the speedometer, shifting and the ABS.

:)Thanks Gandolphxx for the info. I see from your mudflap picture how close the tires are to the flaps. I knew that suspension clearances had to be somewhat different between the 1500 and 2500.
I thought that a 245/75/16 and a 265/75/16 tire were the same width ???. I thought only the height of the tires were different ???.

Oh, and not to get off of the subject, NICE CATS :D. I have 8 Ragdolls and 1 Tabby myself.

You can get lots of tire facts @ http://www.tirerack.com - neat stuff.

In particular the tires that you mention:

245/75/16 ?rim width [6.5-7.5] tire width on 7.0" = ?9.7"
265/75/16 ?rim width [7.0-8.0] tire width on 7.5" = 10.5"
265/70/16 ?rim width [7.0-8.5] tire width on 8.0" = ?11"

These are from BFGoodrich AT/ko

9 cats, you have me beat, 7 is enough for us. ;D

DCRANER,
If you're going to "trash" them let me know. I'd be happy to pay the shipping for you if you send them to me. I'm unemployed and will need tires soon (if they are the 17" ones from the Z66).
Thanks.
Rob
