Storing Bed Covers

I like to use the factory bag to store the 3 bed covers in, I follow the diagram on the inside cover on the bag as far as how I stack them, but trying to put the last cover in the bag is very hard. Trying to get it past the lever on the #2 cover at the bottom is the problem?

any ideas?

Perhaps you're putting them in the bag in the wrong order? If you follow the sequence in the owner's manual (page 2-77 for 2002) you should have no problems. Note that they go in the bag in the opposite order that they come off. The tailgate panel comes off first, but goes in last.

Loosen all the straps.

Starting with cargo panel 1 (the panel with four latches) load the cargo panel with latches facing outboard (side of panel with no latches should be facing you as you load the panel).

Store cargo panel 2 by loading the cargo panel with latches down and facing inboard (side of panel with latches would be facing you as you load the panel).

Store cargo panel 3 by loading the cargo panel with latches at the top of the bag and facing outboard (side of panel with no latches should be facing you as you load the panel).

Zip up the bag and tighten all of the straps.

Following these directions, I have had no problems.

AJ - it was tight for mine too, until I loosened it, of course. >:D

mine is adjustable. I suspect yours is too.

Even if I loosen it all the way, I can't get the two ends on the clips in the bed... I haven't really messed with it too much, just lived with only using the upper strap.

I remember having trouble with this also in the beginning. In addition to the big lever type latch in the center of the strap, there are smaller buckles where the length of the woven nylon strap can be adjusted. I had to play around with these to get the length just so, so that I could easily clip the straps to the bed, and then close the big lever type latch so it snugged down firmly.

I found that from the factory, those straps were just too tight.

I had done all sorts of cussing until I found those additional adjustments. Have you tried playing with them?

what SS said, it came from factory so that it was tight to the side without the panels inside, so it was waaaay too tight when the panles were loaded in it - had to fuss with every available adjustment, finally got it so that the lever snugs it just right with the panels, although it's a saggy mess attached to the side without them now.

I had to put an extension on the bottom fasteners, due to the BedSlide keeping the bottom of the bag an extra couple of inches away from the sidewall.

As for putting the covers in the bag, it was a tough fit at first, but got easier (the bag seems to have stretched a little) over time.

I have lossened the two big straps in the middle. I will look for any additional straps this afternoon.
I am putting them in the correct order as per my owner's manual and instructions on the bag lid inside cover.
It is not as tight as it used to be though, perhaps mine is stretching too.

Seems as things get older they stretch ;D

HEHEHEHE

Yea, I have messed with all the adjustments, not just the big lever thing... Still don't fit.

I will be spending Saturday modding so I will mess with it then. Spring time is here, and hopefully the nice weather is coming too - time to drop both gates and store the bed covers! :p

I store mine on the garage floor. The bag is a pain in the @$$. I've had them in the bag once or twice and that was enough to say.....ok, you've won. I won't use you any more. :p

Exactly. Mine come off so infrequently that when they do, I sit them on the freezer. The bag is in the house somewhere.

I keep my panels on also, except last night I was at the store putting in a lawn mower that would not fit under the covers and I didn't have the "bag." The rear passengers got to hold them! Now I will keep the bag in the truck. If you leave it in the house, might as well sell it.

I carry items taller than "bed top" frequently. It can happen anytime, anywhere, and I store my tools in the bed too.

This is how I solved my problem... works great.

I think this is the case.

THis weekend I put mine in the bag for the 5 or 6th time. They zipped right in and between the rubbr stand-offs.

Of course it is WAY easier when someone else is there holding the bag instead of using the bed hanger.

It is a rare cenario where I need the panels in the bag on the side of the bed. If I take the panels of they go in the garage. If they are on the truck they are installed.

I think we need a demonstration session at the National meet showing and explaining the whole process of getting the covers in the bag, loosening the bag, etc.
I never use that thing I just get some cargo straps and sinch the 3 panels to one side or another.
