Strobes Question?

Have a question for you strobe owners:

Where did you mount the strobes in the front of the truck? ... I have 4 strobe lights to mount and was thinking - 2 in the fogs (I have cladding) and 2 in either the turn signals or high beams ....

LMK! ...

I don't have strobes, but I'll open my mouth and spout off anyway... >:D

My gut feeling would be to put them in the DRL and turn signal lenses, for three reasons:
  • There is likely to be less heat in there from the high temperature halogen bulbs, and heat may damage/degrade the flash tubes.
  • Running the wires into the housings might let water or water vapor into the lens, and the standard glass incandescent bulbs in the DRL and turn signals may tolerate them better than the halogen lamps which are in a quartz bulb, not glass.
  • Finally, the DRL and turn signal reflectors and lenses are designed to give a wide dispersion of the light, which might make them visible from a wider angle. The headlight/foglight housings are designed to concentrate and focus the light over a smaller area. However, since the strobe bulb will not be at the focus point (it can't because the halogen bulb is there) the reflector might work against you. In those housings, you are likely to only see the direct light with no significant lens/reflector action, although that might be enough.
That's just looking at it from an engineering point of view. Someone with actual experience may say that none of this matters.

SS ... thanks ... only problem with the DRL's is that I have FT DRL's ....
Yeah, I could see where that would influence your choice...

Of course, this might be an excuse for another mod: a relay that turns off the FT DRLS when the strobes are on. >:D

I have strobes in the front and the back, the ones in the front, 1 in main headlight drilled from the bottom, 2 in the signal lamp amber strobe drilled from the bottom, I have a six pack control and haven't decised where I want the last one. Strobes in the rear 1 in the upper tail light drilled on the flat side of the lamp, 2 in the backup also drilled on the flat side and again I have a six pack strobe and haven't decided if I want the other one in the signal lamp or not. The strobes are from Whelen they are great strobes but not cheap.

I have 4 pop-in clear strobes installed in the front and the back.
Two are installed in the front main headlights drilled from the TOP, Two strobes in the rear in the backup lights - drilled on the flat side.
I have a six pack Whelen Strobe controller (CSP 690) and haven't decided where I want the other pair. The strobes are from Whelen and are not cheap, but they make a great addition.

GMAN

I will be adding another or upgrading my controller soon (was going to be done before NIAGARA to have a total of 12 ports. I'LL HAVE TO WAIT FOR NOW.

GETTING MY RAM AIR HOOD PAINTED IS THE FIRST ORDER OF IMPORTANCE AT THIS MOMENT.

cool GMAN .....

thanks for the update folks ....

my strobes are the Street Glow version ... would love to have purchased the Whelon ones but could not come up with the $400 bucks for the 8 light set up ... I spent $60 on the 4 light setup and I plan in the future to get another 4 light setup for the rear ....

I have 75 watt strobes. The rears are in the backup lights, the fronts are on the bright lights area. Since this is really the only light I can keep turned off when I want to, they show up better where the light is off.
