Dr Didit talked to his number one intern and they agreed to do a little surgery on Pearl today. For those that don't know, I have never named a vehicle before but there once was a thread asking for your Avalanche's name. I decided that IF I were to ever name our Avalanche it would be Pearl, if you have seen it you may have noticed those purple pearl flames............explains a lot doesn't it?
OK getting back to the surgery, I had this lowering kit that has been laying around for a few? months gathering dust in my garage (THANKS MCM & BELLTECH). I thought that Pearl would just look a little better if she had a shorter stance. Didit & his number one intern agreed so off we go to Indianapolis to the surgery center.
The surgery was estimated to take 3 hours, in fact it took over 10 hours because of a couple of complications. The first corner where the surgery was started she lost a ball joint. One quick trip to Autozone and several dollars later it was replaced. The other front corner went much faster. When we get to the rear there was much more to do than was anticipated.........The sway bar was moved, the trailing arms lowered, dropped shock brackets installed new shorter springs installed and then new shocks for all four corners.
She looks mighty fine with her new stance but there is some tweaking that needs done. The number one intern wants me to buy new tires for her because the taller tires that I now have rub in the front. It is a fairly big rub, it does not take much of a bump to get it to rub while driving. Turning the wheels while backing OR going forward to sharp and they rub big time. I had a little rub one other time when I had a wider tire but this is much worse...........
The problem is that if I go with a shorter tire then the ride will get even worse. My thought is to crank the torsion bars up about a half an inch. This should take care of most of the rubbing PLUS it will give me back some of my ride quality. We installed dropped spindles today and did not touch the keys but they have been cranked down for a while and it reduced the ride quality. It will take a little tweaking but I am sure I will get it just like I want!!
