:B: :( I'm sure some of you guys out there have had a similar problem as this !!! I got the recall notice about the tail gate cables about a month back, the letter said they didn't have the parts yet, but would notify when they were ready, at the time it didn't really matter because my were ok !!! Then low & behold !!! like a dummy I sat on my tail gate !! WHAM WHAM!! both cables broke at the same time! I went to the dealer & of course they didn't have the new ones or even the old ones!!! Please let me know if if anyone has came up with a temp solution for this problem !!!

Search for VR Straps

Here is a link to the web page.

VR Bars

Please note that they need a slight mod to them.

(y) Hell if they broke I would make the dealer get the part and install it and make them fix any scratches or damage to the tailgate. :0:

I hope you are ok.. Were you hurt?? Like VB said I would have them fix it pronto

Hope you are alright. Dealership has to order new cables. new SS cables they tell me will not be available till sept. or oct., But they should have plenty in stock or aphone call away. The letter I got was simply warning that there was a problem. the recall will come out when correct cables are available. Good luck!

I'm with JW!

Get the VR Stainless straps and you will never think about your cables again. They look good and they are functional and strong!

And like JW said, let them know which year AV you have, to get the right items.

Cost about $60 or so, and really worth every dime in peace of mind. ;)

Here's another vote for the VR Stainless straps. For $65, it's well worth the peace of mind. The "slight mod" mentioned above is only need on some Avs. I had to modify the passenger side strap by rounding over one corner a little more.

Ever since problems started getting reported here on the board, I've been cautious when using my tailgate. The recall notice put me over the edge. The VR straps allow me to use my truck without fear of anyone getting hurt.

DITTO...VR BARS!!!

I'd get the VR straps also.

I don't think you should try and get the dealer/GM to pay for any damages resulting from the cable snapping. Technically, you were warned about potential problems and ignored the warning ( I am still ignoring the warning, but mine have rust on the outside of the cables now ), thus resulting in any damage from the tail gate cables snapping.

Was at the dealer for warrenty work on park brake asked about the recall and got a BLANK STARE from the service rep., lucky i had the letter with me then he came up with all the info. said two to three months till they would possibly come in i would be notified by my dealer as where i was was not the selling dealer :E: :E:

I just got my Av about 3 months back...is there a way I can tell if my gate cables were replaced in the recall? I would rather not have to contact the dealer since...well ,they are car dealers and it makes me physically ill to talk to them :D:.

Any ideas would be appreciated. Thx

Mine just broke, you can tell if you look at them when there ready to go. They get all bloated and waive. Not tight and smooth.

My dealer service guy just said "we don't have any recall cables to give you........" Blank stare "come back this fall"

I said, "my recall notice said if the cables break, they are to be replaced with a new pair of bum ones. Then replaced when recall cables are available."

He said "Fine!" and replaced mine.

Get the straps!

Hi Cowboy
Hey man that sucks. :( I hope you are OK. I have been considering this and I'm tired of not being able to use my tailgate. The crap about waiting until September or October is getting old. I am going with the VR straps and they can stuff their stainless cables.

See ya on the 26th.

I have the VR Bars and love em.... IMO forget the cables and grab a set of the bars... The peace of mind is priceless...

Gone in 2 sec's I was camping with my father this weekend, We sat on my tailgate Nothing wroung till we both got up at the same time. "Bing!!!" Both broke and the gate went right down to the Bumper cladding. And left a nice mark on the Gate.. :6: Not a happy camper :E: :7:. I called my friend at a Chevy dealer he'll give me some new cables for now till the new ones come in. In Sept.. The ones I had looked FINE. I've rode My ATV up the ramps and have loaded a ton of things without a hitch.. Well just to warn you all out there I't doesn't matter what they look like. They will brake..Sooner or later... Mine are three years old.....
