Tire Size Change

I'm sure this will be a simple question for sombody out there. I have an 03 AV Z71-also had an 02, but that is another story!!! Anyway, I have 4 brand new 275-70-R16 tires I would like to use for the summer. Can I put them on 16 in. wheels and use them on my Z71. The dealer says I shouldn't, but I don't know if that is true. I know the speed reading will be slightly different and possibly the shift points may change-again slightly. However, is there any mechanical reason that I should't do this. Thanks in advance for any input.

Your stock tires are 265's right? You can use those tires without problems. The difference in the speedo will be so small, it's not worth messing with.
You will probably only notice a small difference when driving.
I stopped listening to the dealers long ago. They have no vision or ideas. They think if it doesn't say it in the book, then it's not possible.

Go for it.

Not only will they work fine, but your dealer should have been helpful instead of turning you off about it.

I have a 2003 Z-71 as well and put a set of 285/70R17s on the stock rims. My dealer attached his computer to adjust for the height, but he has a set of stock sizes he has to pick and 285/70R17 isn't one of them. He DOES have 265/75R17 though which is less than 0.1" difference O.D. from my tires so that's what he chose.

Your dealer should be able to do the same without a problem. If he gives you any fuss find another dealer.

Harry, you are looking at less than 1/2" difference in diameter. I doubt that you will notice any difference between the two sizes.

I was thinking about putting a set of H2 wheels and tires on my AV. I have put no more thought or effort into than that. I do not know anything about there tire size or the difference between the 2 but what do you all think. I am going to research this a little more but since were on the tire subject I thought I'd throw that out.

dday

I like the center cap "locking latch" look on the Hummer wheels, but I wouldn't like the fact that they say "Hummer" across them while on an AV.

Thanks to all of you who took the time to answer my question. I appreciate it.

I went from 245-75-16 on my 2500 to 285-75-16 and the difference is approx 5 mph when the spedo reads 60 the actual speed is 65. I have a programmer but don't think i'll reprogram for tire size. I took the stock Firestones off and went to Goodrich T/A KO. A more agressive tread pattern and still pretty quiet tire.

FYI: Probably a bigger reason than Speedo reading to change the computer is the new diameter tire's effect on both your Anti-Lock brakes as well as your shift points. I don't think that's huge though either so whether or not you reprogram is still a personal preference. Your dealer should be able to get really close for free though.

Axl_Rose: So, what is the largest tire I can put on my Avi?
That question has been asked and answered several times in the 4x4 forum. The answer is, it depends on several things:

- What width wheels are you mounting those tires on?
- What is the backspacing on the wheels you're using?
- What if any body or suspension lift does your AV have?
- Are you willing to do a little minor fender trimming/bending?
(And maybe also)
- Is this for a 1500 or 2500 AV and do you intend to preserve the "E" rated tires on the 2500? If so your tire choice may be a little more limited.

But you will probably find others there who have the same setup you do and you can see how theirs fit.
