Towing Z71 Behind Motorhome. Possible?

GUEST
Hi All,

I own a 1998 27 foot Shasta with a Ford V10 engine (yuck - long story). To this day, my tow car has been a little '96 Jeep Wrangler. I need to get rid of some of my cars and was thinking of using the AV as my tow car behind the motorhome. For whatever reason I do not know what the tow capability of my motorhome is and wondered if I you guys think I would be pushing it with this configuration. The motorhome easily handles the Jeep and my seadoos and figure it to be able to handle at least 7,000lbs. If for piece of mind some special mods would be required to make this happen, I would love to hear them.

My other option would be to tow my '01 Tahoe behind the motorhome which I think is a lighter truck.

Am I crazy or can this be done? I even thought of putting my Porsche on a flatbed behind the motorhome

TIA

The AV can be towed behind a Motorhome. All you need to do is check the tow rating for your motorhome. I have seen several motorhomes towing AVs when I when to Flordia.

My personal fealing is that you should not have a problem, but this all depends upon the tow rating of your motorhome?

I would contact the motorhome manf to see what the tow rating is, or talk to a rep at a dealer. Someone should be able to give you the tow rating.

AV would not be a good choice, because it does not have a neutral position in the transfer case. You would have to install a drive-line disconnect, which is possible, but a PIA.

I think you will run up against the same problem with the Tahoe, unless it is an older one with a floor mounted 4WD control and a neutral position.

Did I just justify keeping another one of your rigs? I tried hard...hope it works.

I thought you could put the transfer case in neutral? I read it in the manual...special sequences of buttons....The Tahoe is an '01 so same as the AV...

Can someone confirm this?

I am sorry but I differ with you on this subject.

See owners manual page 4-46

Recreational vehicle towing.

It clearly states you can tow your AV.

It also shows you how to move your transfer case to the neutral position.

ITS ALL IN THE AV BIBLE

Thanks MrBill. I thought we could. Since I have your attention, 2 Q's for you:

- As you pointed out above, towing my AV depends on the tow capacity of the motorhome. As I mentioned I don't have the books (long story). Short of trying to call the manuf. do you know of a website that might publish some of this information?

-Did u get my PM about your external fuse box?

Thanks

Well, I'll be. Learn something new every day. I assumed (very ugly word, I know) that no button meant no Neutral.

Cool. Probably won't come up for me, but it is still cool.

Carrerarod, I hope your rig has the capacity...then you can start shopping for a towbar that hopefully won't trash out the appearance of your front end.

Now I know you'd NEVER weld a tow bar on to the front end of the Porsche!! :2:
But, if I'm travelling in a motor home, that would sure be my secondary choice for transportation

Carrearod,

How many cars do you have?
'02 Avalanche, '99 Porsche, '01 Tahoe, '97 Jetta, '96 Wrangler, '97 shasta motorhome, '97 Range Rover 4.0, '01 Honda XR 400, '98 Suzuki ATV, '01 Sea Doo GTX RFI (2 of them)....I think that's it....

I saw a large motor home towing a Z71 up over 4th of July Pass in Idaho a few weeks ago. He must have had a helluva engine in that thing since he was doing the speed limit up a pretty significant grade. I don't recall the make.

You must have like a 10 car garage?

Far too many sparkplugs and piston rings in that garage!

Just a 4 door garage for the cars. carport for the motorhome and a prefab garage for the seadoos, ATV's and dirt bike.
