tranny failure on 2500

Has anyone had any problems with their transmissions in the 2500. I have 3.73 gears and occasionally tow a loaded horse trailer of 8,000 lbs.

I also had to have the front rotors resurfaced already.

I live in the catskill mountains in NY, lotts of hills and mountains.

9,800 miles on the av. Its an 02.

I had to take it back already with 300 miles on the new tranny.

When I am coasting down a hill and when I am at the bottom of the hill and give it gas to accellerate, it feels like it is in neutral for 5 to 6 seconds.

I called the dealer and the service rep said it could be the exhaust system is bad and full of rust which is clogging the catalytic converter.

Also they are still looking into the same problem with the brakes pulsing.

Help

are you gearing down on the downhills? Seems odd to have your front rotors done already - I have 45K on my 02 Z71 and have 1/2 the pad left and I live and drive in the mtns everyday.

As for my .02 - your problems don't sound normal to me - though I am far from mechanical :) right guys - LOL

Yes I gear down while going down the mountains.

I have a meeting with the owner of the dealership today. Everyone tells me he is a decent man.

I have also called chevy customer service and have informed them of the ongoing problems with my av.

I have an 02 2500 with 2wd and 3.73 gears. I have driven about 20,000 miles in the last year. About 8000 miles of this was towing a travel trailer weighing about 8000 lbs. Been through the Smokies and the Rockies and have not had any problems. Trans. temp remains normal even in 100+ degrees and brakes have a lot of miles left in them.

The pulsing brakes could likely be related to the brake pad wear. I think the problem with the trans is highly unusual. You could possibly have gotten a bad one, but to have problems with a second one ????? It's possible that the problems stem from controls for the trans rather than the trans itself. Just some thoughts. I'm not a mechanicj.

The pulsing brakes (warped rotors) could be caused by overheating from towing, but...

It could also be caused by uneven torquing of the lug nuts after a tire rotation. You have to watch the shops like a hawk when they reinstall the wheels. If they run the first lug nut down all of the way tight, the rotors will warp. They are supposed to use a torque stick and partially tighten in a "star" pattern.

Just my 2 cents!

It's really easy to warp the front discs while towing. Your front calipers have enormous gripping horsepower. All it takes is one over-speeding cloverleaf exit off a freeway with a heavy trailer to overheat & warp one of your rotors. I had a couple replaced with my 1 ton Silverado.

My 2002 2500 had a Tranny pump failure that took 4 trips to the shop to figure out. Back flow valve in the pump housing allowed all fluid to drain back into the pan when parked at certain position. Tranny would go into Emergency Mode, and shift like a SS396 Chevelle with a shift kit until I shut it off and then back on again.

On one trip I had a similar experience with my 2500. For about 15-20 seconds, I totally lost power to the wheels, the engine would rev but it felt like it was in neutral. Also my ABS light came on and my speedo went haywire. Happened 2-3 times within 20 miles. I limped it to the nearest dealership and they said it was a vehicle speed sensor. Threw a new one in and it seemed to hold up for a while. Hate to say it but save all your receipts and document all your conversations. Good Luck!
