Transfer case oil change

Hello:
I need some ideas or suggestion on how to change the transfer case oil. My 02' Av Z71 is my first 4WD vehicle. I bought the oil from the dealer last week, I got two quarters.
Thanks a lot!

:help:

There is a drain plug on the lower rear of the transfer case. Pull the plug, let the fluid drain, and replace the plug. There is a fill plug at the top rear of the transfer case. Pull that plug, and use a turkey baster to refill the transfer case. Fill until the fluid just begins coming out of the fill plug hole. Replace the plug and clean up. That's it. If you can change your oil & filter, you can change the transfer case fluid.

You might want to loosen the fill plug before you drain the fluid.  If you drain the fluid and can't get the fill plug out you will not have a good day.

Thanks a lot guys. Another thing, do I need to replace the old drain and fill plugs with new ones to avoid any leak?

Should he drive the truck to warm up the fluid?  I have never changed mine, but this seems like something you would want to do.

You don't need to replace the original drain and fill plugs.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to have the fluid at least a little warm when you change it.

I suggest using a little pump that fits on a quart bottle.  I purchased one from my local auto parts store for $4.98, and it is a lot cleaner and faster than the turkey baster.  I also found it hard to get the baster to the fill hole without collecting grit on the tip from the dirty underside of the truck.  You don't want this grit going into the transfer case.

Never really look for a pump like that. Where did you get it from? What brand or model is it?
Might come in handy for other apps

Thanks

Brian,
I purchased the little pump at Advance Auto Parts, and it is made by Lubrimatic.

Hope this helps,
Lee
