Condition
Some customers may comment or technicians may notice needle bearings being found during an engine oil change. The bearings may be found in either the drain pan used or on the magnetic oil pan drain plug.

Cause
One or more rocker arms may have experienced a bearing failure.

Correction
Inspect all of the rocker arms for bearing retainer cap failure. If one or more defective rocker arms are found, replace all 16 rocker arms. Refer to the Engine Mechanical sub-section in the appropriate Service Manual.

If no condition with the rocker arms is found, refer to the service history for previous rocker arm repair. If previous rocker arm repair was made, then the engine may not have been thoroughly cleaned of loose roller bearings. If no previous rocker arm repair was made, then look for another condition.
Remove the oil pan and clean out any additional bearings found within the oil pan. Refer to the Engine Mechanical sub-section in the appropriate Service Manual.
Install the oil pan. Refer to the Engine Mechanical sub-section in the appropriate Service Manual.

Awesome idea to have a TSB and recall section. But it should be a "read-only" section so the good stuff doesn't get buried in the "shameless" posts... ;D

I agree. ?That way anyone who can get these bulletins can PM them to the moderator and then they can be posted to this area. ?That way anyone can find anything that is going on with the AV. ?Good troubleshooting area. ?I'm glad that I can help with this board. ?Maybe I can moderate the board being I had the idea. ?I would like to help with that. ?Let me know.

Cool!

Chief? Goo? Master Gandolphxx?

What does GM think is going to prevent the "lost" needle bearings from getting sucked-up in the oil pump? That little screen on the pump?

Not a good thing :6:

So, does Chevy have to find the loose needle bearing in order for them to decide the TSB applies? That would kind of lock us in to them for oil changes.....

I need a mental picture...

The rocker arm transfers the motion of the cam lobe, from the lifter to the valve stem, causing the valve to open. The valve is closed by the spring based on cam profile.

Are the roller bearings that are failing on the valve side of the rocker? the tappet side? or the rocker arm shaft? What is the impact of engine operation with a bad rocker bearing? Where does the retainer go when it fails? Does it stay on the shaft that holds the bearing to the rocker? How about the loose roller? How would this failure be noticed without the visual clue during oil change? Would the valve clatter or would the tappet take up the slack?

Hey General... Wassup?

Aloha,
Murman :9:
