My Service manager just called the house and told me there has been a recall just issued for Avalanche midgates. ?This recall fixes the leaking problem. ?He wanted me to come down because He, the east coast regional service manager, and myself are going to be there when they do this fix. ?I don't know if my AV is going to be one of the first to have this done, but he said they are going to be documenting this recall procedure step by step and wanted me to be there for ?the "hands on" experience. ?

Thought it was pretty cool for them to ask me to get involved like that. ?

Anyway, be looking for that recall comming to a dealership near you.

thanks for the info Wiki. I will be sure to check the mail often. Keep us informed on what they are doing and the like. Would like to know what to expect when I take mine in. Thanks!!!

Hey guys. How do we find out more about this fix? Is it a warranty type thing? Is there a reference number like a TSB or something?

My dealer here in Boise, Idaho is great! My AV does leak a little though. I just want it to stay dry.

Thanks, Jason

I will find all that out as soon as he sets up an appointment for me. I will also take my digital camera with me. Reporter Wiki is on the scene  ! More info to come....

After reading this post I checked my GM link page for my AV and they do not have anything listed for recalls yet. Please keep us informed, if you think about it, ask your dealer when they issued the recall.

Thanks,
Gatorjedi

I checked that too. I have been working with the local Service Manager now for about 3 months on this issue and evidently we are going to be the first to do this fix. I have had them do all sorts of other things and actually my leak is fixed. But now, since we work well together, he called and said he wants my AV to be worked on for this "New" recall that GM is putting together for the midgate issue.

Im thinking ??? it is not a recall as of yet, but since some high ups are comming down and they will be documenting the whole procedure, this is the making of a recall. Make sense??

All I know is he called it a recall and Im going to take her in for a bunch of GM personel to try something new from above. Wish me luck. Hope I still have a midgate when this is all said and done!

You are some kind of Star. ?Apparently Mr. GM knows how important you are to this site. ? (y)

Please do keep us informed.

I am a little man in this site. ?A mere pawn. ?Just doing what I can to keep us all informed. ?

Thanks though. Wiki walks away as his head swells to the size of a pumpkin

Wiki,

Thanks for the info. I have only had one very minor leak and I believe it was my fault but I would be interested in learning about this.

Did the dealer say recall or is it a TSB? The only reason I ask is that I thought recalls were safety related and TSB's are for other known problems.

The other difference that may affect some people is that recalls must be fixed at no cost to you and you must be notified of it by the manufacturer. TSB's on the other hand only need to be fixed if you ask the dealer to fix it, they do not have to notify you of it, and the cost is only covered if the truck is under warranty.

:) Glad to here this. We have had so much, problems and the dealer thinks i am Female Dog, because i keep complaining about the leak.
I have had my truck to the dealer 3 times, and it still leaks.
I am also having wind noise and water leak from passenger front side.

Please keep me posted

Thanks

I have read many of the members concerns and heartaches about the leaking midgate problem. I have only had my av a few weeks now and avent noticed anything but it has also only rained heavy once since I picked it up. SO far so good. But it is nice to see that with the release of teh 2003 model that GM is starting to address a major problem with this truck Water is a major problem ....isnt it?

I wonder if the recall is restricted to certain Av build dates. Mine was built in 12/01 and I have had no problems with midgate leakage. However, my bed panels leak slightly in a couple locations.

I haven't had any leaks to the inside of the truck from the midgate, just some from the panels and they are minor. It's been a month since the first post on this subject and I haven't heard anything. Did you meet with the Chevy people yet? Thanks! :B:

I just got off the phone with my Service Manager again (seems like all my posts start like this), and he set up the appointment for Friday AM. ?

I asked him if this fix for the midgate leak is new and will be the new fix for all of GM. ?His response was, "Thats what we are hoping for." ?

So basicly, I am the lab mouse for GM this Friday.?I hope this becomes a permanent fix for our Midgate leak issue. ?I will keep you all posted on the results. ?

Also involved in this matter is another one of our members who is sort of quiet in here. ?LETS HEAR IT FOR "BRADO". ;D ;D (y) (y)?He is dissapointed on the leak issue and has just about given up his AV. ?He will be there too to donate his services for all the "Leaking Ones"!

Yes please keep us up to date on what they find. I just got my AV and it has a build date of 6/02 so hopefully with it being a late year model I will be ok. It really hasnt reained since I go the vehicle so I do not know if it will leak. I expect it will not since a small percentage seem to have the problem. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Good luck to you and hope they fix the problem for you and us all.

killer

i just had my av in the shop 2 weeks ago for a leaky midgate. well it finally rained in denver and guess what it leaked. i called my dealer and its going in tomorrow. try number 2. the first time they said the cargo boxes were not in straight and that made the seals leak. i think they also adjusted the latch in the midgate cuz when you leave the window in you have to smash the gate up to get it lock.

since i'm going in tomorrow any more info you could provide would be great. names, numbers, anything. my dealer is really cool and i think they would take the info to heart and not blow it off. if you can share any more info drop me an message/email. if any of my info would help i would be happy to send it to you.

thanks for the heads up (y) (y)

hi all

well this is day 2 of my midgate mess ???. i dropped the truck off yesterday at 7am and gave them the info that wiki provided us. when i handed my service manager the paper he read it and looked at me with a blank face. it was kind of funny. then he asked if this was for real. i replied as far as i know yes. he took a heavy breath and said he'll do his best to get the truck done today. at 5 last night he called and wanted to know if they could keep the truck over night . like i really had a choice. i asked if they were able to use the info i had given them and he said said they where using every resouce they could get there hands on. then i asked how it was going. he said the same tech had been working on the midgate all day and couldnt get it to stop leaking. no matter what they did to the seals it still leaked into the cab . they thought it might be done after lunch today. we'll see what they say this afternoon.

I have a little insight on this now. Until your dealer orders the "New" seal from GM he will not have the right fix for this. If he can wait till Friday (I know that is hard for you) I will have part names, numbers, phone numbers of contact people, and other information on what they do to my AV. Hope this helps you, Keep your chin up, it is just one problem that seems to be overwhelming at the time. Once it is fixed you will have one Bad @ss ride. (you already have a great ride, it just needs to wear some Depends Undergarments)

-update-

just talked to service manager and they are going need my truck for at least one maybe more days. i guess gm wants them to run a bunch of tests on it but i at least i get a loaner  i'm going to the dealer to pickup some stuff from the truck and i'll see what they tell me then

Going to bed now but bright and early in the morning I will be up and off to the Dealership to figure out this midgate issue.

Looking forward to meeting some of these people from home office and trying to get some free stuff out of them for using my AV. Muhahaha

Goodnight

i did the mod/quick fix that was posted a while back. i have not had any problems since. but, i have not had to open the mid-gate since then either.
i think most of the leak comes from not properly closing the mid-gate crossbar on both sides. again, something i learned from the sight. :B:
