I am interested in installing some type of backup warning system on the Avalanche.

Cadillac Escalade Ext comes with one described below. Does anyone know if the same system could be obtained for installation in the Avalanche?

This, and other ideas have been discussed in several threads. Do a search and you should find quite a bit. This thread should also get you started. ;)

I tried calling my local Caddy Dealer regarding this very thing. After speaking to them, I was told that its not possible to transfer the backup system from the caddy to the AV. They gave me a bunch of technical reasons, even after I explained that I was willing to purchase the unit and have it installed at thier shop. I believe your better off going with an after-market model. Several members have done this mod with pictures to follow. Look up the tread suggested by ShapeShifter.

Thanks for the replies.

I am reading the thread now.

Debating between Poron unit and the wireless unit.

I read that as "Oh my goodness...we'd have to think for ourselves. Nothing like that is in our standard how-to shop manual!" Dealerships do not want to do anything that deviates much from standard replacment stuff.

Unless somebody tells me a) the Caddy system is useless, or b) it would cost $1000 to retrofit, I'm still interested in the Caddy system, even if I had to do the install myself. Does anyone know how many parts are involved and what it takes? I know JP was working on this once upon a time, but it doesn't seem like he's finished. (Did I read that he gave up on it for some reason?)

Anyway, I've read the "other thread" a couple times over the months, and haven't really learned that there is a "be-all" product. Rosta? Poron? Countless no-names? I guess I'd like the Caddy version 'cause it would be well integrated and would look like it belonged there. But I'd want it to be of decent quality.

Chasman--if you're reading this, what do you have? Didn't you have a backup sensor that failed to see me in my Avalanche! :)

You might want to look at the Guardian Alert doppler awareness system.
This system has many different install options and runs about $300 at Sears. You can see lots of info at www.sensetech.com and also at www.guardianalert.com
It seems to be a simple system in several cases no drilling to install. It has a warning light in several colors based on distance to object as well as various audible beeps also based on distance to the object.
A local Chevy dealer also installs it and they claim good results and many happy customers.(But I know they are trying to sell it also.)

i test drove a 03 WBH last month and it had a back up system that gave you a verbal countdown to the distance of an object that is behind the AV. the speaker for this system was mounted on the headliner by the left rear seat.

is this the cadi system or a aftermarket system.

i like it and would like to get one

thanks

That would be aftermarket.

Caddy is ultrasonic and displays 3 lights in the right-rear corner of the passenger compartment.  Close, closer and Oh CRAP! lights ;)

It also uses those d*mn chimes! Think they're annoying now, how about a rapid rate when you get really close! More distracting than warning. But they do work. And the lights in the Caddy show well in the rear-view mirror.

Right.  You're not reading or following.

You saw aftermarket, that is NOT the Caddy system.

Caddy system is three lights and chimes.

As for the brand of aftermarket, who knows.  You'd have to investigate that with the truck you viewed to be 100% sure, as there are a few that talk if memory serves.

I used the Poron backup sensor before I got my backup camera.? It was pretty darn accurate.? When it said '3 inches' I'd slam the brake, get out and measure it to a box I had in back of the AV and it was damn 3 inches.? ?;D

I removed it cause I didn't want to have both backup camera and sensors (good thing I didn't mount the sensors onto the bumper.? I mounted them underneath so the holes would not be visible).
