Water In The Bed

I did a search, but could not quite find the answer I needed. I have a snug top and it is sealed well. I drove through a very heavy downpour for about 13 miles. Next day I found my stuff in the bed wet from the bottom up in the middle of the bed. I do not know where the water came from. I am pretty sure it is not from above as everything topside was dry. Maybe came up through the drains or tailgate. Any suggestions where it is coming from and how to stop it.

Get inside and have someone hose off outside..........

the bed drains have little flapper thingys to prevent stuff from blowing back into bed area....

Hmmm.... I have never noticed water coming up from the drain holes in the bed. The fatc that it was centrally located in your bed is another odd thing. I'm stumped ont his one. Only thing I could think of is maybe you had a water bottle in that back that spilled

No water bottle and there was water under the mat along the drains, especially on the right side. But, I am worried about how much water got to the middle. Don't know if the water is at coming in or going out the drains.

Somethings to consider......

Ever wash the bed out and make sure all drains are clean? There is 5 drains...2 on each side easy to see and one up front under the plastic thingy that rips flesh off finger s.......

Water under matt is normal......

Check the beforementioned drains for flappy thingy is working...........

You sure snugtop does not leak?

Try the hose test........

I looked at the flaps and no clog. I do see daylight when I am in the bed. Should I be able to see some light.

Where is the daylight? I cannot think of any place? well there may be some small places but I would try the water test...and if you sit in the middle and get wet then something is wrong.....

I daylight is between the flap and the drain hole. ?Too cold and snowy to do hose test now. ?My theory is the water got in the drain hole and moved on to the mat. ?Like I said before, the top of everything was bone dry. ?Snug top carpet on interior of snug top bone dry. Could the flaps be defective, it is a 2002 model, ie should there be alittle daylight or not.

In my case, the little flapper valves in the drains block off most ofthe drain hole, but there is still a little gap where you can see light. I would derscribe mine the same way you describe yours. I have looked at mine closely, and they do not appear to be malformed or defectiive, I just think that's the way they are.

The flapper valve appears to be intended to prevent a lot of dust and water spray from flowing up through the drain, but I'm sure it is not perfect. The problem is that the valve has to be free-flowing enough to allow all water inside to flow out, even if it is a few drips. The issue here is that there is no water pressure behind this draining water. That means that the valve has to be very flexible and easy to open.

The downside to that is that it is easy to open for water coming the other way. Given a hard enough rain, and driving through some puddles (which is inevitable in such a heavy rain) I have no problem believing that water could splash up hard enough to come back up the drains.

I suppose that it would be possible to design a valve that would prevent this water from splashing up, but then that would limit the maximum draining flow rate through the valve, or require a certain amount of water pressure to allow drainage (meaning that there would have to be significant water accumulation in the bed before it would drain.)

As it is, I'm guessing that the current design is a compromise balancing the conflcting requirements of flow capacity, low drain pressure, and limited back-flow.

I'm guessing you hit so much water, that you passed the back flow limit. It's probably a fluke, and I wouldn't worry too much about it happening in the future, unless driving in that much rain is a common occurance for you.

Of course, that's easy for me to say, since it wasn't my gear that got wet. I'm sure you're looking at it a bit differently right now.

i have a '03 AV, i think the water in under bed mat is from auto car wash i use that has under body high pressure wash system. i always must remove bed mat and dry.

I hear about body seams not being sealed near or in the wheel wells. Does anyone know about this and could the water gotten in the bed that way.

I always seem to have condensation under the mat. To help protect this area I applied Rust-oleum protective truck bed coating. It was cheap and easy, the black color looks good too.

This is not condensation, but water on top of the mat.

have water in bed and behind rear seats, had it to the dealer for 10 days still not fixed returning it tomorrow
