What does Z71 stand for

Sorry is this is an easy question but I'm new to the Chevy line, What is the significance of the Z71? Where did the number come from? Is Z71 just Chevy's code for an off-road version of a vehicle?

Z71 was/is an option code for the off-road stuff. It is only used on 1/2 ton 4x4s.

Z-71 is the order code for the off road package, just as Z-78 is the code for the high performance package on the Camaros or the Z-1 package on the Corvettes.

Z11 was the Corsica Lt package in 87-88, also the Cadet option in 82-83.

Brado is correct about the ZR2 highrider S-10 .

RPO ZR2 only full ladder-type frame with modified suspension mounting points which provide:

100mm wider track (3.9 inches wider than regular S-10)

Three-inch suspension height increase

Enhanced front (7.25" ring gear) and rear (8.5" ring gear) axles w/ 3.73:1 rear-axle ratio

Larger wheel and axle bearings

31 x 10.5R-15 LT/C black wall off-road tires (BFG A/Ts on pickups and BFG Long Trails on BlaZeR2)

46mm gas pressurized Bilstein Monotube shocks

Rear axle track bar (pickups) / rear sway bar (BlaZeR2)

Wheel flares (black on S-10 pickups and BlaZeR2 / body-color on Sonoma pickups)

33mm (early model) / 28mm (late model) front anti-sway bar

Here is the skinny on the ZR1;

It can be a little difficult to tell the difference between a ZR-1 and the standard L98/LT1/LT4 Corvette. But here are some clues:

1. All ZR-1s are coupes.

2. All ZR-1s have the 3rd brake light on top of the hatch or roof area.

3. All ZR-1s are 6-speeds

4. From the rear all ZR-1s have a ZR-1 emblem in the right rear corner.

5. From the rear all ZR-1s have a 1 1/2" spacer between the license plate and the back up light.

6. All ZR-1s have 315/35ZR17 tires in the rear.

7. Inside all ZR-1s have a "power key" on the center dash below the radio.

8. Later model ZR-1s 1992 and up a ZR-1 emblem was added to the side of the hood just in front of the doors.

9. All ZR-1s have a special solar windshield glass.

10. All 1994 and 1995 ZR-1s have the new 5-spoke wheels.

The ZR-1 engine or LT5 was an all aluminum block and cylinder heads, 4 overhead camshafts, 32 valves 350 cu. inches V8. The HP rating was 375 at 370 ft lbs of torque from 1990-1992 and 405hp at 385 ft lbs of torque from 1993-1995.

The original Z24 was an SS427. They really should retire these RPO #s . It doesn't seem right that this is now for trim on a cavalier. I agree with Avynut;
