??? What is the little round thing in the roof over the driver that looks like a small speaker grill?

I haven't checked the Owner's Manual, but I think that is the microphone for the Onstar system.

I thought the same thing. Salesman didn't know. I found the On-Star mike built into the rear view mirror mount.

I guess this thing is the temp sensor? Sounds logical to me? Owner's manual doesn't say anything about it.

The grey insert in the roof is the temp sensor for the climate ctrl and the mic for the onstar is the black dohickie btwn the mirror and visor.

Not sure about that. I've taken the grille off and looked at the insides. It sure looks like a mic to me, and I've always assumed it was for the auto-volume on the stock stereo. To verify, someone could compare wire colors on each end.

By the way, I DO NOT recommend taking the grille off. The grille snaps into the mic, sandwiching the head liner between. Without anything to push against, you can't get the grille to snap back onto the mic. I had to pull the head liner down and shove a spatula inside in order to press down on the mic. It was a freakin' nightmare.

As it is, I think only 3 of the 4 snaps are in place. I just try not to bother it, and it trys not to drop out on my head. It's a precarious agreement, but so far it's working out. ;)

I could not tell which was the onstar mic: above my head or next to the rearview mirror. I therefore called my house with onstar and asked my kid which was loudest. She said she could here me better when I spoke right into the mic above my head, therefore I think it belongs to onstar.

It is not for the auto volume control. The auto volume control is completely speed related and does not have any "real" intelligence built into it. The cab of the Av is so quiet - I turned it off because I could hear a noticeable increase in volume when I had it on!

seems we have some confusion.

If the circle is the mic then what is the little black thingy by the rearview mirror?

Maybe they have two mics so they do not get feedback or something?

Ok, I checked with the factory rep on this, he just happen to be at my dealer when I was there on Friday. He said that the mic for OnStar is the black thingy by the rear view mirror. He also said that the round thing is climate control sensor for the Auto mode.

The reason for the On Star Mic in the position it is, is the fact that we are looking forward and sound waves travel quickier is a straight line, plus they use the Windshield as a bounce back for the sound signal to ensure the highest quality reception.

It would make sense they would put the mic for the onstar where it is.....most of us that have our eyes on the road while driving would agree. ;D

One dealer told me that the round thing above the drivers head was the speaker for the Onstar system not the mic.

OK, a dealer also told me that the Avalanche was longer than the ext cab silverado, not, it's 3" shorter, also said it didn't come with a driver's side dimming mirror, not, got one on mine. The dealerships are not the best place to get info unless they have connections higher up in the manufacturing chain. That's what these sites are for, You Go Chief AV!!!!!!!!!!

As the battle rages on!!..Onstar vs climate control sensor

would seem to me that one with a shop manual could end this debate quite firmly and quickly . . .

I agree....

After reading the stereo threads the onstar plays from the door speakers so that rules out speaker above head.

The thingy by the rearview mirror more looks like a mic and is in the proper position to be a mic.

According to the service manual, the black thing next to the mirror is a speaker for the onstar. Maybe the round one on the roof is for the cellular part of the onstar. I could not find it in the service manual.

I'm still a newbie though so I don't know much

Battle is over.

It is for the auto climate control! ;D
