What Is That Smell From The AV?

Last night I pull into dinner after a nice ski trip - hop out of the AV and there is a stink coming from under the hood.

Everthing looks good - today a friend tells me I left spots in her driveway and the stink is still there. Since it is light out I crawl around and start checking out the AV.

My Idler's are now black from the belt and I discovery my power steering Res is low. More checking shows fluid under the AV coming from the Power Steering Pump.

So with less than 5K miles until I hit, 36K - the AV is going in for another problem. I love this truck, but I have had many things with the engine or drive train go bad and I am worried it is going to hit my pocket soon. :(

Sorry to here about you problem. :-[

maybe it's time to look at extended warranty.

I only have 6K miles on mine after 2 1/2 months and from what I've been reading here, I'm going to be pricing one.

Hey Blueruck . . .

Sorry to hear about this problem - let us know what the dealer tells you . . . . I just hope they aren't CAFCNA members who have seen your pic's and heard about your adventures - they might accuse you of abusing your truck! ;D ;D

Is is possible that there is a power steering pump problem with the AV. Blueruck has one that leaks, mine makes noise, and I've seen other posts on here about power steering problems. I don't know if the pumps are the same on the 1500 and 2500, but the problem seems to be on both 1/2 and 3/4 ton AVs.

NOW NOW I treat my AV like a baby >:D

I know just how you feel Blueruck. Mine now has 34K miles and I am not happy with what I have. It has been to the shop over 8 times in the 1.5 years that I have it. It is going back on Thursday for rearend noise that I still have and popping noise from the front when I turn. I really love me Av just not sure how well it is going to hold up for the next 4 years that I still have to pay for :8:

I have a whining i the rear of my Z71. At about 55mph if I let off the gas there is a whine until about 45, and its pretty noticable. Over 55mph and under 40mph it goes away. The dealer diagnosed it as a pinion bearing. So at 9k miles its getting pinion bearings and I'm having the cladding on the drivers side rear door replaced, its peeling off at the top due to a broken clip at the leading edge.

Blueruck sorry to hear about you problem
I have a smell that comes from my AV but it is in the rear of the vehilce after climbing up hills or off-roading or even a long drive it smells like hot rubber I have 41K miles on my AV

I know that when I go to Stevens Pass and I reach the top to ski I have an odd burning smell. However it's the road chemicals burning off of the exhaust.

It's pretty stinky, but the only place I ever have it is up at the pass...several other Chevy owners (Tahoe, Suburban) have the same thing up there - so our speculation is it's the chemicals they put down to melt the ice.

Blueruck - come on buddy, I'm not zinging you but your Avalanche must go, "oh no, not again," when you get behind the wheel. Must admit though I LOVE those off-road pictures of yours!

Now now Chief the AV only hides when it can see me all wound up :) (4x4 time) Otherwise it is road trip time

I just got back from Portland OR today (about 4 1/2 hours) and the rear of my AV had a hint of a burring rubber smell I had just came over a major mountain pass and I was in 2WD so I don't know what the smell is I am going to take my AV in to the dealer tomarrrow

I have 22k on my 02 Z-71. Have climbed many passes over it's time with me w/o a single problem till last weekend driving up and over Tiger Summit on the way the ThePass for some skiing. I was about to top out on climb over Tiger and started noticing a burning rubber smell, I wanted to get to the top before I pulled over to investigate. My passengers thought something was going to blow up it smelled so bad. I pulled over popped the hood and NO smell, no sign of any problem - no smell in the environment either!
We climbed back in, cleared the air in the cabin and got to the Pass without any other concerns. I read in this thread that it may be to a DOT deice chemicals burning off my exhaust???? Any other thoughts before I call my service people???

Thanks,
