Don't know about the 03 but on an 02 it is right next to the oil pan drain plug.

(Took me a little while to find it too).

Look at the pan and on the drivers side is where the 02 filter is.

Have not seen one on an 03 - but am relatively certain they are in the same place. Left rear corner of engine on the bottom.

Yes, on the '02/1500 just to the left of drain plug looking back to front.

Speaking of oil filters. I just finished changing oil and filter. Started up the AV and let run for a couple of minutes. Shut her off and when I double checked underneath was greeted with a flow of Mobil 1 running toward me in a steady ooze!

Turns out that the gasket from the old filter stuck to the AV, and I never noticed when I screwed the new filter on top of it.

I had the last change done by the dealer (it was a freebee), and they must have over torqued the filter 'cause it took a little effort to unscrew.

There has to be a moral here, hmmmmm.......

It's right here...

The 'old gasket stuck on the block' happens with some frequency. A friend of mine drove off with this situation and a bit later his low oil pressure warning light came on. Fortunately no damage, but he was able to trace a line of oil all the way back to his garage! Something to check before installing the new filter.

I think that the reason that the filter is a bit hard to spot on casual observation is that it is quite well recessed into the cast aluminum oil pan.

This happens every so often, usually the installer did one of two things. A. Didn't lube the filter gasket. B. Put the filter on with torque reading reserved for Peterbuilt lug nuts..you know it won't leak that way  :8: WHY WHY WHY must people not follow the most basic of instructions? I'm finished venting now. ;D

I'm thinking it was done by a Peterbuilt mechanic on loan for the day, doing his first vehicle of the morning after three coffee's! :7:

This baby was on tighttttttttttt.

thanks for getting back to me the picture was a real big help, again thanks for the information-john

Of all the vehicles I?ve owned the AV has the best design for changing the oil on. ?You only need one pan as the filter is next to the drain plug. ?I had other vehicles where you had to peel off the firewall, cut the wheel one way or the other etc, etc, they were not very user friendly. ?My Durango was the worst as you couldn?t reach the filter from the top or from the bottom. ?You had to go over the front passenger side tire and do it by feel as you couldn't see the filter. ?
