Yep, and years ago, people scavenged the junk yards for converters from a automatic Vega to put them behind small block Chevys with TH350 transmissions.

I think im still cnfused on how higher torque converters help. I somewhat do but not completely. ???

They simply allow the engine to get high in rpm before moving the vehicle.  At the higher rpm, the engine is making more power and therefore will accelerate quicker from a stop.

There's more to it than that but that's the primary benefit.

What would be the drawbacks of having these if I use my AV as a daily driver?

How would it affect towing?

How would it affect mpg (city)?

I have a 3.73, Pro-Cold CAI, and magnaflow muffler- would this be the next step or should I get a tune next?

Thanks!!

towing- it would help you accelerate from a dead stop but it will at the cost of higher trans temps.  You would definitely want a trans oil cooler if you were to tow with a above stock stall converter and it's a good idea even if you don't tow.

MPG- it will decrease you mpg in town due to the higher rpm as to how much of a decrease, that would be hard to say but I don't see it being more than 1-2 mpg in town and in theory there would be no loss at highway speed as the clutch in the converter is locked and there is no slippage.

You should get a nice gain out of either a custom tune or a converter.  Personally, I would say go with the converter first so that the tuner can make minor adjustments for the converter.  It's not required to tune for a converter but I raised my part throttle shift points a little to reduce slippage.  You can also get by with firmer shifts with a higher stall converter, as it soaks up some of the jolt of the shift.

That's what i thought. I'm not much interested in that than. I just realized i hated how the trailblazers felt when i drove them. The v6 felt more sluggish because of that reason. It actualyl had a nice bit of power but the lower end just felt so empty...
Just my opinion though. I'm sure it would have benefits for the track or just other people in general.

KYBob I didn't think annyone else here but me was old enough to remember scouring the junkyards to find vega torque converters to put behind small block 350's or in my case small block 400's. Man do I feel old!                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  >:D                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  :B:

Sure, I have also crawled around in scrap yards pulling covers off of diffs hoping to score a posi unit or a set of low gears.  When that's all you can afford, that's how you do it.

Been there done that too. I remember getting a used gear set from a friend then going to the junkyard and scrounging thru to put together a posi unit. I struck what would be considered nearly gold now on one excursion. A complete 12 bolt unit from a wrecked Camaro SS  tha no one had found yet. to put under my Nova.

Aw, it was a old Nova that I did that for too.  Mine was a '73.

I finally came up with a set of 4.10's and a used posi for my 10 bolt.  I got a local shadetree guy to install them for me because I knew that they would whine if I did it myself.  Long story short, they whined anyway but it accelerated better.

The hell of it is that 3200# wouldn't outrun my current 6200# AV in the quarter.

Mine had a set of 4.56's man that Small Blocl sounded good till it ran out of breath at the hi rev's not enough head, not enough cam, not enough carb. But it was vicious from stoplight to stoplight. >:D
