Oregon,

You all know I am new here, and I could use a little help. Can any one give me some suggestions on where to go Fishing, I have the regs but seem difficult to read.I'd like to go salmon fishing and try steelhead and of course trout.

For hunting how about info on which units or hunts would be good for Elk and Deer and maybe Antelope.

Avalance andy antelope near you?

Any and all info is helpful.

Columbia River opens June 16 to summer chinook
SALEM - The Columbia River will open to the harvest of hatchery summer chinook Wednesday, June 16, because run size predictions and current dam counts indicate a limited fishery will not harm wild stocks, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife announced today.

Fishery managers have adopted the following temporary rule:

The lower Columbia River from the Tongue Point-Rocky Point line upstream to the Oregon-Washington border above McNary dam is open to the retention of adipose fin-clipped summer chinook effective Wednesday, June 16, through Saturday, July 31. The retention of adult chinook longer than 24 inches is allowed under the temporary rule. The retention of adipose fin-clipped jack chinook shorter than 24 inches and adipose fin-clipped steelhead is allowed under permanent regulations. The daily bag limit is two adult salmon or steelhead and five jack salmon.

Effective Sunday, Aug. 1, the Columbia River will be open for salmon and steelhead fishing under permanent rules listed in the "2004 Oregon Sport Fishing Regulations" and the "2004 Oregon Ocean Salmon and Halibut Sport Fishing Regulations with modifications to salmon and sturgeon regulations for the Columbia River system and near shore ocean waters."

Azfun,

Well, looks like I'll have to chime in here. I should have posted a similar question to the Colorado group! (I'm having a very difficult time trying to figure out where to go, etc. And I never had to put into a draw for a tag in Oregon.)

For big game, I've only hunted blacktail deer and roosevelt elk (coast range), so that's what I can provide information on.

As 'kevin mentioned, the drawing for tags is over and those include tags for mule deer and elk in "eastern oregon."

Now, the over the counter stuff will pretty much let you hunt from the coast to the west side of the Cascades. (If I recall correctly, "high Cascade" hunts are lottery draw.) But that still leaves plenty of areas to hunt.

If you are used to hunting mule deer in high desert conditions, blacktail hunting is a totaly different animal. No pun intended.

With that said, I mostly hunted the Trask, Willamette, and Santiam Units. Trask being in the Coast Range, Willamette being (oddly enough) in the Willamette Valley, and the Santiam being in the western foothills/west side of the Cascades, Southeast of Salem and Northeast of Eugene. Problem with the Santiam Unit is after the Willamette Industries/Weyhrhauser (sp?) "merger" a lot of my stomping grounds were gated and locked. :6:

There is some real good hunting near Jewell (towards the coast from Portland area) because of the wildlife viewing area. The elk flock to that place, so there's always good numbers in the outlying areas. Can't remember which unit that is in. It's a nice day trip to go out and view animals there, even when it is not hunting season. I've seen wild turkeys at the viewing area along with the elk.

I'd give you GPS coorinates to a bunch of my spots but my Magellan 300 sat in with my hunting gear too long and the batteries died - and there went all of my waypoints. :E: :E: :E:

I can drive right to these hunting places but my memory for the road #'s sucks. If you want more specifics, feel free to ask and I can pull out a map - I just realized I still have maps of those units in my gun cabinet! The ODFW maps should help a bit.

Maybe SteveTimm is watching and can chime in, since he writes about hunting and live in the area.

My cousin is a professional guide but I do't know what his plans are for this coming season, if he's working in Oregon or some other state. I need to get him back out here to guide me to a big bull! ;)

HTH,

-Joe
