Windshield Replacement

The installer just left my place after installing the second replacement winshield in 10,000 miles.

Replacement is factory specs and is a duplicate of the original.

Cost was $185.00 installed at my office.

Just in case you have the misfortune I did. 100 MPH wind gusts on I-15 outside of Las Vegas, couple of weeks ago.
I was parked and the windshield was still obliterated. At least being parked, the paint didn't get hurt.

Maybe I'll drive home in reverse tonight

I drive that stretch in the summer months when going to Lake Powell. What exactly did the wind do?

No, really.... 100 MPH winds will pick up some pretty big rocks and throw them real hard at your truck. Sandblasted and pitted the glass so bad I couldn't drive in the setting sun.

I figured you were probably refering to pitting or rocks. I thought maybe the wind pressure might have blown out the glass. Thanks for clearing that up.

Back in 86 I had a brand new Mazda RX-7 and went up to Palm Springs. I was cruising on 111 and anyone familiar with with that are knows about the sand storms.
By the time I got into town the whole car was sand blasted....

On the topic of windshield replacement, what about the tape jobs some of us have done regarding the hood deflector? Will the window replacement company be able to remove the window trim and plastic piece after the 3M tape has been there awhile?

Just curious as I can foresee a huge hassle/mess!

I keep meaning to post about this. Now is as good a time as ever.

Has anyone else noticed that the glass that ships with the Avalanche seems extremely soft? Within one week of owning mine, I had two small rock chips, and I did not even hear when the rock hit. In addition, I now have a scratch on the glass from my windshield wiper, and there was nothing going on but rain at the time. No mud or dirt on the windshield at all. I do not know whether to take it up with the dealership or just wait a bit longer - it won't take long with this glass - and wait for it to become more pitted and then get insurance to replace the glass.

Yessir, you're right on. There have been previous posts regarding this subject. The original glass was very soft and prone to chipping with a good hit from an 80 MPH bug.

The replacement is a lot tougher.

This makes sense. I too was surprised as to how easily I got a couple of 'bulls-eye' cracks within the first 2000 miles. I honestly didn't realize that there could be such a significant difference in glass quality.

Guess I'll keep my full glass coverage!

Trophyman: Thank you for the confirmation - at first I just thought I was having a very unlucky experience driving my new truck. It is good to know that I am not the only one experiencing it. (Though it would be even better if none of us were experiencing it.) I am very glad that I decided to pay the extra for glass coverage, because I feel I may be using it.

Has anyone had to price out the rear glass? I know it is only a matter of time before that gets dropped. Of course, I will blame the children.....

exactly everything mentioned in this post has been rolling around my mind for the past few weeks and am also one to vouche that my windshield did not last that lond either until a few hairline cracks and bullseyes started appearing.

i use my Av to go up to the snow during the winter and im afraid that if i change my windshield that it would just do the exact same thing.

BUT i noticed that trophyman mentioned that the replacement glass was alot stronger. should i just replace it, and if so, do i call any glass repair service?

I used Safelite. ?I think they are nationwide.
$185 total and they did it here. ?Took about 30-40 minutes. ?The installer said he had 6 more Chevy trucks to do that day. ?He said the original glass is very soft and is susceptible (for those of you driving ferrin cars-that means it happens a lot) to nicks and blasting from the slightest dust in the air. ?The new one is a lot tougher. ?Don't know anything more than that.
