OK Guys and Gals, we need something to do in February to get us primed for the Basket Run. ?How about a trip to Winterplace Resort for some tubing/skiing/or just sitting by the fireplace ??? ?Winterplace is located about 80 miles south of Charleston WV. ?We can make this a one or two day trip. ?Our Ohio friends need to experience some the sights and sounds of WV (ha-ha) and maybe we can get some of the VA group to make a trip north. Dates that would be good for us is the first weekend, the 1st and 2nd, then the 15th/16th. Those are the weekends that Bubba is off. If it should end up being on a weekend he has to work, I'll just bring the boys myself. It looks like fun! I have to measure Connor though and see if he has reached 44 inches.....it's gonna be close!

Mrs Bubba :B:

Yes LRnerd, All members are more than welcome.....The more the merrier ;D

Either weekend will work for us.....

Connor has been measured. Minimum height requirement is 44 inches....he measures at 43. Does anyone have any shoe lifts? Time to start feeding him some miracle grow!

Mrs Bubba :B:

Great place for me, I used to hunt for moonshine stills up on Flat Top. That is before it became a tourist attraction, and international ski resort.

I could show you all some trails you've never seen.

OK...let's set a date for Feb 1st......wouldn't want to miss Bubba on a tube >:D If this date works for everyone, I will contact them, let them know we are coming and see what happens. Let's start getting a headcount.

Count us in then! What plans have you thought of? Are we all going to stay Saturday night there or do we intend to come back to Charleston? Where should travelers make hotel ressies at? Dinner there or in Charleston? Can you tell I am a planner? ;D

Pipestem isn't far from there. I think they are running some Feb specials.

We are a 100% definite maybe at this point. Depends on when we have Tiara's birthday party since her B-day is on the 29th.

We could make reservations in Beckley WV :0:.It's only about 15 mins. from Winterplace....that way if someone wanted to go back to their room it wouldn't be far. There is a Country Inn and suits there  that has a indoor pool and there is about any kind of restaurant you could want right there. I looked at winterplaces lodge and those rooms were going for $200  Country Inn is about $75. This is just a thought and it would keep us headed back up north at the end of the day. :cautious:

MAC you one of those REVENUERs ain't ya....But honest it's for consumption ...not sellin ;)

Well, I will probably make it for this trip too, good excuss to head that direction for a weekend. Being a Virginia Tech Grad (meaning every weekend during the winter when there wasn't homework to be done, we were up there!) the tubing park will be crawded later in morning thru late afternoon but not early morning or later evening and the slopes are normally all pretty good all day except the bunny slopes! (but who uses those??!! ;D ) For lodging you have two chocies Beckley (which will cost you a $1.25 toll going back to Beckley from Winterplace and another one going to Winterplace (the trip from Charleston will cost a total of (3) three toll booths each at $1.25) the other place to head to is Princeton (a little bit further the wrong direction but a lot of food and lodging options that are normally a lot cheaper (most tourist don't head that direction). As for WinterPlace - a group rate is available for more than 10 people and they also have combo tickets which allow you to ski and tube - Rentals for skis are available and the later you get there in the mornings - the longer the lines (you use to be able to reserve them in advance before getting there for those who know their size preference - if it can be done, it will save you a ton of time and headaches!) As far as food goes - Beckley has pretty much everything that Charleston has - most everything is located at or around the Crossroads Mall. They have an Outback, Olive Garden, Ruby Tuesday (I am not sure if it open yet or not - I just know that it was in the works last year), and great little sandwich place called Macado's. There is a Bob Even's right off the interstate right after the Tamarack exit. There is also a hotel there, I think it is a Days Inn (my memory is fading on me). Something also worth keeping in the back of everyone's mind is the New River Gorge Bridge (only a 30 min drive from Beckley) a drive that is well worth it. Of course for those people who get bored of driving straight interstate there is also the beautiful drive down US 60 going past Hawk's Nest, following the river through to Cathedral Falls (with a ton of great overlooks on the way), Oh - but wait I passed Kanawha Falls (the only Falls left on the Kanawha River (I believe)) and round the drive off with a nice drive by DuPont (did they really have to build so close to the road ??? ) and through the city of Belle before jumping back on to I-64 in Charleston. What a way to spend the day driving :0: !!! I LOVE WEST VIRGINIA! Well, just some food for thought.

Night all!

avarchitect,

You have turned a day trip into a weeks vacation.

Bubba,

That's what they all say.

Pipestem is a great place to stay. I wonder if the cabins are avialable? I spent three years living in Princeton, working out of Bluefield. I miss that place. It sure has changed in 25 years. They probably don't even make good "shine" any more. I remember when we would kick holes in the ice to trout fish near Flat Top. Then there were the times we would just follow the stocking truck to the fishin hole. Used to catch them WV gold trout.

We have to decide what session we want. You can get a ticket good for 1-5PM or from 1-10PM for a few bucks more. Did any of you check out the "accomodations" at Winterplace??? $12.95 per person for a sleeping bag and air mattress, shower and breakfast.......just a thought. Also, rates for motels would probably be cheaper in or around Charleston, so if we left Winterplace around 6PM we could go back to Charleston for dinner. I am flexible......
Mac and any other NEO
How long would it take you to get to Charleston? WE could probably meet at the Capitol grounds and then head on down the turnpike together.

Those are not accomodations! YIKES! If that is all there is, I will be headed back to my warm comfy bed! That's like, like, CAMPING! <gasp> Sorry, too much of a spoiled little city girl for that. Melissa, you and I can grab an AV and head back here...leave the boys to the bags. ;D
As for the session...I know that 5 hours would be MORE then enough for my boys. Maybe if one group wants to stay until 5 and another until 10, we can just have 2 groups.

Mrs Bubba :B:

Mrs. Bubba, it looks like you may have to be our official decision maker. I for one have a hard enough time making decisions for myself let alone a whole group. :cautious: :-[
I think 5 hours would be more than enough time on the slopes (Taney even says 2 might be too much . )If we did the 1 to 5 session we could eat dinner after that and then everyone could do what they wanted do after dinner (Go to their motel room and swim, go shopping, or ski longer.) :cautious: We could meet back up sunday morning for breakfast and then be on our way home or go see the New River Gorge Bridge. ??? These are just some ideas. We probably need to make resavations soon though.

Do we have a head count?
