Last night I spent 3+ hours working the dealer for a Z71. He says that you can no longer get a Z71 without the sun and sound package. I just would like to know if this is true? Also what does that package entail. I don't think I want it and it is another 1500 that I would not have to pay for. Any thoughts would be apreciated. On a side note, when I brought out my GM in the Driveway Cert, the guy almost fell over.

John, if you go onto the Chevrolet site and build your own Avalanche you will be able to see what this package is and no you do not need it with the Z71. The Sun & Sound package includes a specialty sound system, XM satelite radio, a 6-disc indash CD changer, and a power sliding sunroof. However, it may matter on which model of the Z71 you are looking at; Z71 1SL which is the base Z71 model, Base 1SK which is the Z71 with cloth bucket seats and upgraded sound system, and then there is Base 1SM which is the fully loaded model of the Z71. My guess is that you are getting the base Z71 model and therefore the Sun & Sound package is only and option, so you do have a choice.
Your sales rep is just trying to get extra money, because that's basically what they do.

The guy is full of beans. Sun and Sound is a package separate from Z-71. The deal is that they probably ordered all of their Z-71's with the S & S package.

JJSnowking and Avalance (there are probably others, I just remember those 2 off hand) work at dealerships so they can tell you for sure but:

From the chevrolet build your vehicle site, the Z-71 consists of:

  • Z71-Premium Off-Road Suspension Package with rear locking differential, specially tuned shock absorbers, Traction Assist

    17-inch aluminum wheels

On the options page, Sun and Sound is a separate option:


  • Options for Sun and Sound Package

    Sun and Sound Package, includes (U2K) Sound system feature, | XM Satellite Radio, (UC6) Sound system, ETR AM/FM stereo with 6-disc CD changer and (CF5) Sunroof, power, twililt-sliding (PDA)
I would go somewhere else. I don't that sales guy is being honest. And I think you should tell him, and maybe his sales manager, that you don't appreciate the line of crap coming out of his mouth, that they lost a sale due to it.

Seriously, walk away.

I think he's full of BS. If the dealer is being a jerk, I would go somewhere else. No need in giving him a dime if he isnt willing to work with you. When I was looking at new AV's ('04) a while back the dealer had Z-71's w/out sunroofs.

I wanted a Z-71 w/everything: leather, sunroof, etc. The salesman didnt want to show them to me because he said that since I was so young that he didnt think I would be able to get the financing for a $42K vehicle. I politely shook his hand, and told him "thank you sir, your probably right. I have never bought a vehicle before and I had no idea that lenders consider your age when you apply for a loan." As we were walking back towards the front of the lot I asked him "Even though I just graduated with a degree in Engineering and make $70,000, you really think they wont give me a loan?" His ENTIRE attitude changed. He said that he 'thought' he could make it work, for me to just fill out a little papework inside. I told him no thanks that I would go buy somewhere else.

Call some other dealers in your area. Good luck!

Just an FYI.. when getting the latest price for you new AV.. ensure that they provide you with the latest pricing revision for that vehicle.. for instance when I went to buy my AV about a month ago the 1st salesman told me one price (gm supplier discount). I was unable to keep working with that gentleman the next sales guy told me another over 1400 dollars difference)still with the gm supplier discount) on the same vehicle..The 2nd salesman was looking at the cost of the 1st revision of that vehicle.. The 1st was looking at price revision # 3.. Made a difference! sun and sound package discount among other discount's were not included in the 1st revision.

My '04 Z71 didn't have the Sun & Sound package, but it had everything in the package except the 10 way power seat with leather. Instead my has power seats with sport leather. The cost is about the same. Most I looked at had S&S, but the cost was actually cheaper than some AV's without it due to some package discounts. So, unless you want a base model z71, you might really want S&S even if you don't care for a few of it's items like XM. I have XM and didn't want it, but I wouldn't want to be without it now. Go to the GM web site, build the Z-71 you want then have it search for the dealers within the maximum distance you are willing to drive to buy! I drove 1 1/2 hours to PA from NJ Shore. Got exactly what I wanted at a price better than local guy was telling me I had to settle for.

If you have kids or travel with people in the back seat, don't dismiss the Sun and Sound package so quickly. My 16 yr old is very quiet on rides now that he has rear seat audio for the CDs in the dash. Also there is a $1K discount which makes it cheaper in the long run with all the "stuff" at trade in time.

Just my 2 cents! :)
 
Thanks for the ideas. I think that I will probably stick with the sun and sound package. But I don't desire a sun-roof. We will see what the dealer says on Monday.
 
The guy is full of it. The Z71 is completly separate from the S/S package. Unless you want a base bench seat model you should go ahead and look into the S/S package. There is so much savings in the package that it is almost a no brainer. Its too bad you don't live close to Dallas. I sell to CAFCNA members 350.00 below invoice. No hassles just pick out the one you want and I go write it up.

I sometimes overhear BS from other sales people talking to customers. I just walk by shaking my head. Its funny when they wonder why I sell twice as many as some of them.
Good luck, I would try another dealer or at least talk to the manager and maybe he will put you with a different sales person.
