EVERYTHING GM Trailer Wiring Harness hook up wiring etc

The plug/fuse labeled Z82 is the RPO code for the trailering package. It says to install the fuse and use the plug to attach a brake controller.

I connected mine to a brake controller shortly after I bought my truck so I'm going from memory here, however...

By installing the fuse you will get power to the battery feed pin in the trailer plug receiver under the rear bumper.

I paraphrased the quote, but where does this all take place? Where do you put the fuse mentioned above? I am trying to figure out why everything else works in my 7 pin but the 12v supply. I should mention I do not have a contorller plugged in at this time. Thanks.

OK.  So I have power going to the trailer brake controller (black wire from the utility block to the controller 12v+).  But, the light on the controller doesn't come on and there is no power at the plug coming out the back of the truck.   Nothing with the headlights on.  The 40A fuse under the hood is good, I even swapped it with another fuse just to be sure.  I've tried to trace the trailer harness from the rear, but it goes up into the driver's side rear quarters and I lose it from there.  Any suggestions where to start?

Thanks

Some of the controllers out there do not light up unless you are hooked up to a trailer.

hey everyone, I just took the brake controller harness out of my 99 gmc1500. will it work on my 02 AV. It looks to be the same plug setup in the electrical box under the dash. Is it possible everything will work the same. Also my 99 was the new body style, So everything in the cab is almost identical  Help please. Thanks Steve

Yes, it should be fully plug and play compatible. Starting in 2003 they changed things around and while the plug is the same, the connections are a little different. But in 2002, the wiring is the same as in 99.

When you do it, make sure to check the STUD1 and STUD2 fuses under the hood. Sometimes they come from the factory with dummy plugs installed that look like fuses, but aren't. One of these provides brake power to the trailer brake plug under the dash, the other provides battery charge power to the trailer plug on the rear bumper.

I have an 02 1500 Av, bought a pigtail and brake control from NAPA. Hooked the four wires from the controller to the pigtail by color as directed. The problem is I have feedback coming from the junction block the pigtail is plugged so when I turn on my lights it activates my brakes. The plug has five wires two in the top row one in the center and two in the bottom row, I'm getting power back through the top right wire when I turn on my lights. Why is this and how do I cure this? It seems like the brake control is not sending full power cause it helps but I can't get it to lock up the brakes or even close to it manually sliding it but when the lights are on it has much more stopping power! I'm lost, thanks for any help

Can you post some more details, what brand and model brake controller

Welcome to the club!  :welcome:

You must have a pigtail for an '03 or later truck. For some reason, between the '02 and '03 model years, Chevy redesigned the truck's entire electrical system. As part of this, they kept the same plug for the trailer brake controller, but changed the meaning of some of the pins. I think what you have is the "dashboard illumination" signal being fed into the "brake light" signal. So instead of pressing the brakes causing the brake controller to activate, turning on your headlights (and thus turning on the dashboard illumination) is causing the brakes to apply.

If you read through this thread, and especially this post you'll see what needs to be done. If you're not comfortable doing it, go back to the store and get the right pigtail, one designed for 2002 and earlier.

I still don't understand why Chevy changed the pin assignments, or if they felt that they HAD to change them, why didn't they go with a different plug style so there wouldn't be any confusion. This is a common problem caused by this change.

More information... this post shows the pinouts of that connector for 2002 and earlier, and for 2003 and later. You can see that all of the signals are the same, except pins A and D are swapped. This exactly explains your situation where the dashboard lights control the trailer brakes.

Attached is a pictorial of the 2002 brake controller plug along with the pinout descriptions. The 2003 looks the same, but as shown in the page linked above, a couple wires are moved.

If you bought a pigtail with blunt cut wires that you spliced to your brake controller, your simplest solution may be to simply connect the brake light control input of the controller to the brown wire of the pigtail instead of the light blue. (Assuming that the brown wire is at least as big as the light blue, I don't recall if it's a smaller wire.)

HI, I'm sorry if this topic has been answered before, but I am confused. I have a POD brake controller on my 2003 Avy. A friend gave me his Prodigy he did not need anymore. The problem is that the underdash wiring to the POD is composed of a Black, a White, a Red, and a Blue wire. Every information I could gather, even in this forum states that the wires should be Red, Black, Light Blue and Dark Blue. Even on the the label of the new connector from Tekonsha these colors (with brown for illumination) are described. My question is what is the connection between the the 2 blue wires I supposedly have and the Red and White I do have.
Thank you for any information.
