New Avalanche coming in 2020

One thing I am kind of worried about is if they bring it back that they may base it off of the new blazer or one of their other mid size platforms
Several years ago someone posted photos of a Colorado based platform concept vehicle that resembled a downsized AV. That was back when gas was so expensive and large truck sales were lagging. Not sure it would be needed today with lower gas prices and more efficient larger trucks. Large truck sales are back up again.

What is crazy to me...

A loaded burban @ 80K = Mercedes Benz E class Loaded or BMW 5 Series.

Yet drive up with both and ask those around which cost more... and they all point to the MB or BMW....

Truck prices are nutz as I have seen houses for less.

I wonder what all the economists think of these prices based on current middle class wages... something has to give soon.
Spot on man.  I ordered new a 2001 BMW 325i with a goal to keep the price down.  I wanted a rear wheel drive sports car with a manual transmission but it needed four doors for my (then) very young daughters.  The only options I got were sports package, single disk CD player, sunroof and fold down rear seats with ski bag.  I don't have leather, cruise control... heck I even have manual seats, though they are awesome ten way adjustable sport seats.

Anyway, after I bought it I got all kinds of comments like "Oh, you must have gotten a huge raise", "OOOHHHH, look what your driving.  Wish I could afford it blah, blah, blah".  What I had to explain on a constant basis was that my car was about five grand less than mini-vans we were considering (and thankfully never got) for my wife.  I agree, it's absolutely nuts what they charge for "Trucks" these days.  I really don't want what they're selling 'cause when I buy a truck, I want something I'm not afraid to get dirty or some urban assault pavement princess.  Give me cloth, give me manual seats, give me durable without 10,000 electronic gizmos that are just begging to be replaces at a high cost.

As far as the economist go, I would have to think they think it's nuts too.  I mean, the costs are through the roof and with all the unnecessary gadgetry they are becoming more disposable everyday vs. something that will last.

Oh yeah, that Bimmer is still going strong at 211,000 miles and the simple 2001 Suzuki Grand Vitara XL7 we bought for my wife instead of the mini-van is still motoring along at 202,000 miles and is now on it's fourth driver in our house.

I doubt they would make AVY on midsize...

since reason for midgate was to make bed longer so SHEETROCK or PLYWOOD fits inside bed under cover...

With midsize... COLORADO - not wide enough for plywood (only 44" wide) ... so these owners are not really hauling plywood etc and would not need AVY midgate... Also frame is not long enough to get the 97" from tailgate to folded down seat backs...
SO I really doubt they would ever add midgate to COLORADO midsize as I cannot think of any reason I would need to lower it - maybe hauling furniture... but I would rather have fullsize...

Midgate is what makes the AVY an AVY... anything else is a pick up or burban.

I think the avy has to be fullsize as the midgate and bed size are what its greatest feature is...
I mean interior is same as trucks and burbs.
Exterior front end look can be same too.
Difference is having a covered bed that is 49" wide by some 53" long most of the time.... and when you need 97" long bed you open midgate.... and then the option of keeping covers on or off; window in ot out... makes for greater hauling opportunities...

For me the midgate is the DAYUM why did they not think of this years ago feature.

Heck I though the swing open doors on the rear of older burbs was awesome getting rid of the roll up window and tailgate.

:deadhorse:
I don't think that truck would catch on since it only has a 200 mile range and needs to be recharged about 15 times to make a cross country trip... >:D
Can you also imagine the replacement cost of the battery pack when it needs replacing as all rechargeable batteries eventually loose their charging capability. It may make it a disposable truck.

I read that today as well and think it is very cool.  Swiss Army Knife like and utilitarian.  Not the overpriced luxo-truck that seems to be the trend these days.  I'm sure over time they'll work out the range issue.  I also read today that Tesla is aiming for million mile drive trains since there is less to go wrong on electric drive trains.  They're starting with he semis with the intent of pushing the million mile range down to the cars.

I did a quick specs comparison of the 2nd gen Avalanche vs. the B2 based on info published by TFL Truck today.  The payload and ground clearance figures are impressive!

I think this is the closest we can get to a new Avalanche:

2018 Silverado High Desert Package

And here is the 2017 kit that you can use to do it.  The 2018 came from the factory, no kit.

Last year while staying at the Cosmopolitan Hotel &b Casino in Las Vegas Chevy Trucks was having a conference at the hotel. One of the big wigs from Chevy got on an elevator with me and I told him I was driving my third AVA and wasn't sure what I was going to do since they are no longer being made. I told him they should bring the model back and offer a Duramax and Allison Tranny combo on the 2500 models. He actually stopped and looked at me and said "Wow what a vehicle that would be." I told him I would be waiting on it .

Again  :deadhorse:

The idea of a Duramax AV has been brought up many times over the years and one or two members have created their own in the past. Back when diesel was cheaper than gas and gas prices were up some members really wanted one. Not sure if the increased development cost would justify the few sold if developed especially if it was designed well to give increased hauling and towing most diesel people would want not just better fuel mileage.

Hope they do make one but not from China. GM has been doing a lot of building in
china after closing a few US plants.

As far as I know, except for some models that GM imports in, anything currently made in the US that is now made overseas is just for the overseas markets. With some exceptions I understood GM was just building stuff out of country that is sold out of country. Especially with the Trump "taxes" on imports...

That's the one thing one can expect from the current global policy of Trump is that more global companies such as GM are more likely to diversify their holdings than to keep them all in one country... Which of course will also hurt US export numbers and shift jobs elsewhere... But for smaller, non-global countries Trumps current protective measures could be an eventual bonus. As to the farmers losing out to Chinese tariffs. I believe the US is getting enough back from the Tariffs on Chinese imports to pay off those farmers losing out. Assuming they are smart enough to do that...

GM and Ford are moving plants to China with the hopes of selling more there and other countries. Exports to the US will increase and eventually more plants in the US and Canada will close. 2019 saw 5 close in the US and Canada.
Regardless of the political reasons, Trumps attempts to keep work here is good but the big companies only look at the profit they can make by moving. Wait until people bring in a car or truck for repairs and are told the parts are to arrive "sooooooon" from china.

Time will tell. I still want a new Avalanche MADE in this country.

Comments from a local Michigan news paper below

"General Motors already exports the Buick Envision to the United States from China. Cadillac makes its CT6 Plug-in hybrid in Shanghai. Once production gets going, the Focus is expected to ?more than triple? China?s exports of cars to the United States."
China has been working for years for this moment. As the Times reported, Beijing ?has put very heavy pressure on Western automakers to transfer their latest, most cutting-edge technology to China as a condition of doing business.? Many automakers ? including GM and Ford ? are planning to shift research and development there."

When I was 19, back in 1969, I owned a 1955 Chevy Sedan Delivery- rolled and pleated interior, carpeted back, bucket seats, 283, 4 speed- Chevy orange color, man I was a  bad dog. I even had a smart father take one look at my car and tell me, "my daughter isn't going out on a date with you in THAT"- and he closed the door. He was a mind reader, he was. Anyway, I can't bring back that car- a telephone pole got in the way on an icy road-
So, enjoy just what we have. The boys on my old HHR forum also had long faces when the HHR was cancelled and the interest for the HHR is getting less and less. I just  sold my HHR with 77,000 miles and it was probably one of the lower mileage ones.
For comparison, use the internet Wayback machine and see what the posts here looked like back in 2002-03.
Manic enthusiasm  was also exhibited on the early HHR forum-
My goal is simple- on 06/04/2031 my Avalanche will be 30 years old and I hope to keep it that long as I want to get my 30yr Florida antique plates, so I can take it to the classic car rallies.
I am emptying out my garage this week, so I can continue to keep it parked inside, like the previous owner did-

Move here to Arkansas and get your antique plates when the truck hits 25 years of age.

My 1993 Ford Explorer got his last year.

No more annual renewals.

wow, I like that idea- seeing as how, I am in the mood to move out of Florida. One hurricane was enough for me- Irma was the name and the eye passed 15 miles east of my house.

Just make sure you are OK with the humidity we get in the summer.

It can get brutal.

A year ago, nearly to the day, my wife and I found "Casper" - a 2004 2500 AVA - being sold in Reno, NV.  We were on a flight there in a week, and driving home the next day.  Living in Chicago, whose idea of snow control is "more salt", my '04 1500 Z1 ("blue" :B:) is pure rust down below.     The 2500 has ZERO rust.  I swapped out the battery, and once I broke the hold-down bolt free, was able to loosen the dang thing BY HAND!  Amazing.  So, casper now lives in the garage, and is my "2020" AVA!  <100K miles, the big block, lifted 6", and with a matching snug top.  I will see antique plates for him, where ever that might be.  Blue will need a frame-off resto, but because I drove him off the lot brand new in '04, he's got a special place in our hearts, and that restoration will likely be in my shop.

IMHO, the *next* AVA, if that day should come, would be built on a 3500 chassis and work like a truck.  The engineering for structural integrity using the truck frame isn't that difficult to achieve, and a duramax power plant is the only way to go.  An electric midgate (or at least the window) would be a great option.  I love pulling the rear window, but it's kind of a pain in the butt to do.

Regarding the electric trucks...  When I'm 80 miles out into the woods and my battery dies, where the heck do I plug it in?  :help: Seriously?

Cheers,

Seems to me they painted or powder coated the 2500 series chassis, all they have to do is the same paint or powder coat the AV chassis and that thing will last for decades instead they applied a waxy greasy undercoating over bare expose metal, hit a branch or something exposing the metal then add salt and the nightmare begins. Their not stupid they know in a few years you'll be back buying another AV if painted it will be decades...

LOL, they're not going to make it.  The current target market for a used avalanche are people looking to spend sub $10k. That's NOT the same people who spend $75k on a new vehicle.

(save your butthurt, I know there are exceptions. No need to tell me that you have money)

It appears that they are now talking about a potential 2021 model.  Someone said that Chevy may actually do it to compete with the Ford Raptor.  However, nobody really knows at this point.

Here are some interesting links though:

:deadhorse:

Again the above links appear to be "click bait" for advertising, first link greyed out article because I had an ad blocker in place, second article if you read it closely says it's a made up image of what they want a new Av to look like etc. The third link looks old and they use photo of Special Ops or some such Silverado in the article.
I personally don't trust any of those oddball websites with "sneak peaks" of a future vehicles since they know there is customer demand for a third gen Av but they are selling ads with no real substance......Just my .02 I would NOT get my hopes up until GM releases official website info and can give a release date and more accurate info and photos.
As has been said since  late 2012 on this website, no real plans to revive the AV due to lack of sales and increased costs which don't justify production. Remember the GM attempt with the High Country High Desert Silverado just a couple years ago,how many of those did they sell? I bet not enough to justify bringing back the AV.....
