Rattles

I am a service advisor at Acura, People come in day in and day out with little rattles and squeaks that we spend countless hours trying to hunt down and fix (most of the time we are able to fix them).

Since buying my Avalanche I noticed the interior dome light rattles all the time, when I put my finger on the two on/off buttons on the light the rattle goes away.

Has anyone had any luck with Chevrolet trying to fix rattles?

Acura vehicles have rattles?? ? ??? I thought they were "bulletproof" according to all the auto magazines. Anyway - I have had virtually no rattles in the Av over the first 13 months.?

I have a rattle in the column along the drivers side of the windshield. If I push on it, the rattle goes away. Sometimes it rattles, sometimes it does not. ???

The one that drives me insane is the rear window. I've checked for cracks, as suggested. . . .found none. I've made sure the midgate is closed tightly. . . it is. I'm going to try some of the silcone stuff as suggested by the manual for treating weatherstriping, and hope that works.

RATTLES- I GOT EM!! My driveway is over a mile long and is all dirt and rocks. I make rattles!! I too have the dome light rattle. It seems to occur when the weather is colder. When the vehicle is on paved surfaces it runs silent. I had to have my dashboard removed due to a faulty heater core and I envisioned the worst rattling ever after the reassembly. But to my surprise there were none.

I believe part of the roof liner is secured with velcro, located just above the headrest. Push upward in that area and it might help - it has for me.

Good luck!

Not sure if I have rattles or not. Either the radio is too loud or my girlfriend is in the car covering up any noise that exists.

Yeah. Whats with that? My wife can sit in silence till I turn on the radio then she wants to talk. I used to turn the volume down and hear her out. Now I use the remote and secretly increase the volume.

I thought I was the only one with this problem! I have to slowly increase the volume over a 15 minute span to win this battle :)

Just a hunch...
You may want to check if it's the wiring rattling against the roof.....

Yes they (Acuras) do have rattles.
and because the cars are so expensive people tend to notice any little thing wrong with them.
Because of this I am now tuned in to listening to them in my own truck.

anyone taken them to the dealership for warranty?

A few months ago, I had a rattle in the back seat somewhere. While helping out with a tire change, I decided to use the Av jack (easy access) rather than digging through the trunk of the other vehicle. Well, the jack wasn't completely secured down. Now that it's snug in its place...no rattle.

Axl, I took mine in for rattles in the dash and the front driver side door panel. They put new clips on the door and tighted up the dash. The door panel still rattles and the dash rattle has not returned. Seems the warmer it gets the less I hear the rattles.

My midgate rattles on the driver latch side. Anyone have this? I tried pressing harder to latch it better, but it still rattles. And I am not sure what it rattling. The plastic covering or the window or the latch. This only occurs with the seat down. With the seats up, the slight pressure stops the rattle. Any suggestions?

The pressure from the seats being up stopping it makes me think that the latch is not latching tightly. The two latches on each side are double latches -- each latch takes two clicks to close tightly, just like the doors.

When you close it, can you hear two clicks from each latch? My guess is the latch needs adjusting. Either it is too tight, and the second click isn't happening, or it's too loose and even with the second click it is not pulling in tight.

Eather way, sounds like a trip to the dealer to have it checked out and adjusted. When the midgate is latched properly you should be able to push firmly right below the latch and not have any significant movement.

Just a guess, kind of hard to diagnose remotely. :6:

We still don't have any and I have very sensitive ears when it comes to odd noises in a car--especially rattles. The only noises our 12/01 built '02 Z66 have are a slight "baby mouse" squeak in the frame of the driver's seat, a very slight squeak in the steering column when turning back and forth in places like the driveway, and every now and then a slight noise from above the rear window where the plastic shroud taps ever so slightly around the hinge opening.

Other than that, it's quiet as a mouse and I hope it stays that way. We just bought a '93 Cadillac Fleetwood and have been driving it a lot, so I'm not around the Av as much as before...

(I really have to update my sig....the Chevelle is gone, and a few other things have changed!)

Thanks for the info. I only hear one click from each latch. No matter how hard I push, only 1 click.

SS has (as usual) the good advice, in an earlier thread about midgate leaks, one of the moderators posted how his dealer worked with him to solve the leak issue. In that work through came the explanation about how the midgate mechanism works. I have put Wiki's post form that thread for you below... you should read what he explains as the correct closing procedure... in particular where to push on the midgate... and see if that helps with your rattle. If not, then the dealer will probably be the best bet for you.

Just got back from the dealer and have good news

I will be downloading pictures into my picture on line site so you can see what I am about to describe.

The fix for the midgate, if yours leaks after you do what I am about to tell you, is a new seal that inflates with air. It makes closing the midgate extremely hard but it will not leak. All dealers should be able to get this special seal. If your dealer can't find it you can email me for the number to my service manager. He has been wonderful in helping us out. I doubt you will need the new seal though.

Your midgates have 3 different parts that open and close. We all know about making sure your arrow is alligned on your window with the arrow on the midgate. That is the first thing. The next two I knew to do but didn't know how. This is why I took pictures. On the cross bar that your window sits in, be sure it is centered and closed tight. By closed tight, I mean to push not only on the center, but also on each end. If it is not closed all the way you will hear it click again when you push. Do this for both sides. (pics to follow on my sig later today)

On the midgate itself. Be sure to close it all the way. This sounds simple, but to prove a point, the guy from GM had me close the midgate myself. Needless to say, I tried to slam it shut so it was closed. Then he showed me how it was not closed. In the spot where your rear window stores, if you use the heel of your hand and push in the top corners (of where the window stores) you will hear your midgate CLICK shut. Do this to both corners.

Our midgate and crossbar have the same kind of locks as our doors. They have a double locking system. If you close the door on your AV and it is still not closed all the way, it will rattle and move. Same priciple applies to the midgate. The midgate will look to be closed but it still needs that extra push to close the rest of the way. Sorta like when you put your butt into your door because it didnt shut.

I hope this helps you guys out a bit. Like I said, I will download the pictures into my webpicture site. You can click on my signature below to access it.

Anyone out there heard of this kind of rattle/squeak? When I'm driving at a slow speed and pass something like a parked car on my left I hear a definate noise. I had something that sounded like that on my last car and it turned out to be coming from one of the floating calipers. That noise would go away when I would touch the brakes. This one will not. I've also had to replace a couple of CVJ's in my time ('Constant Velocity Joints' for the abrev. impaired!). I'm worried that could be the problem. I inspected the rubber boots underneath and they all look good (nothing torn). I'm taking it in next week for that and also the single horn problem and the buzz behind the dash problem. I have done the sway bar bushing replacement mod (I inspected them and no problems I can find) and I'm running bigger tires (285-65/17's) but I've seen posts from AV owners with a lot bigger tires than that. Any other ideas what it could be out there before I throw myself at the mercy of the dealer? :6:

You can hear it on relatively smooth roads. I haven't noticed it over 20 to 25 mph though. Whatever I find out from the dealer next week (I hope) I'll post on a followup here. I might go look at the spare tire holder. I saw that on another post. I can't seem to hear it from the passenger's side, only the driver's.

If it's a high frequency resonance (like a set of sunglasses are vibrating against the windshield) ...

Here's a likely culprit and a LOT of people have and had the issue... The big black housing that contains the heater core and ducting etc. is sitting against either the firewall or something else and resonating... The fix is to remove that big housing and apply insulation to the vibrating area and re-mount ... I guess during assembly some insulation has been installed and some not, and with trucks that have no contact there, it's not a biggie, but some trucks have contact and there's the culprit ...

If you PM Wiki, he had the issue and got it fixed and I guess went through hell and back finding it ... He has much more detail about it and can give good info ...

Don't ya luv this place ?
