Update On Slick50 Oil Change - MPG Is Up

Well I added the Slick50 to my oil two-tanks of gas and 600 plus miles ago. I filled up on yesterday and I was shocked. I went 370 miles and put in 25 gallons. That's 14.8 MPG, combined 65% city and 35% highway (and a portion of that highway driving is low speed in 4WD over our mountain passes - also most of that is uphill from sea level to 4,200 feet).

This represented a solid 2 MPG increase. I didn't realize until this morning where the extra 50 miles in that tank of gas came until the light came on. The Slick50 is starting to soak the parts and I've hit benefit number one. Gads I love the stuff - ya I'll check the next tank to see where things are at, but I'm 99% sure these are realized gains. If I can get the equivalent of 2-1/2 gallons more mileage out of each tank at $2.50 a tank conservative, the Slick50 will have paid for itself in just six tanks of gas (about 4,100 miles of driving)
 
I bought some Slick 50 Synthetic at Wal-Mart after reading your post. ;)

Then last night I went web-hunting for info on Slick 50 - and MOST of the reviews and info was NEGATIVE. ???

So today I returned the S50S and will do more research later.

Glad to know it works for you :D - but I'm a little worried. I use Amsoil synthetic oil, and Amsoil recommends NOT using any sort of oil additive..... :rolleyes:

Chief - Slick50 is actually a bad thing long term. It doesn't "penetrate", rather it coats. Coating is bad. Think of your arteries and cholesterol. Coating is bad. It can clog, even if partially, which will have a long term affect on the engines lubrication system. Basically anything you add to your oil that has "suspended" particles, i.e. teflon, etc, is a no-no.

If you change your oil and filter every 3000 miles, that is going to be about the best thing you can do, maintenance wise, to keep it running long and well.

Hello everyone,

I added slick50 and mobil 1 at 5750 miles after one tank of fuel I added 75 miles in my first fill up.

What should I expect to happen when the slick50 breaks down.

Nate I have to disagree with you. I've done this now to four vehicles and the results have been the same every single time. Better mileage, zero engine wear. I swear by the stuff. To each their own I guess - all I know is I'm squeezing another 50 miles out of each tank and my MPG is up about 1.7 per gallon. It sure isn't because my driving habits of changed either - I've done lots of sitting in traffic this week!
 
I've used the slick 50 in my previous vehicle, but sold it soon after....so I don't know if it actually helped or or not....

I have never heard anything negative about it....the only think I've heard is a lot of sceptisicm toward its effectiveness. ???
 
I have been using Valvoline Syntec full synthetic oil. 5/30. Does anyone know of any problems with synthetic oil?? I switched at 890 miles.

I used Slick 50 in my '91 Silverado and never had any problems. Actually picked up a little MPG, like others said. I added it at about 10,000 miles. The truck was totaled at 89,000 miles and never had an engine problem the entire time.

Also used it in an '88 Beretta. Added it somewhere between 45,000 and 50,000 miles. Sold the car last October with 185,000 miles on it. Never had any engine related problems with it either. I see it running around town here every now and then.

I havn't added it to my current truck yet.
 
Well, I'm now up to 4,680 miles. The last fill up got me 13.97 MPG. This included a 4-Hi, 3-gear climb through Stevens Pass in heavy snow, and a horribly long sit in heavy traffic on Monday. So after several tanks of gas and now 1,500 plus miles I have gained roughly 1.0 to 1.5 MPG in my Av post Slick50.

I had a 90 blazer with the 4.3 liter...ran it over 200 K before I sold it....

200K of snow plowing off roading hell...
the guy I sold it to still has it..uses it to deliver chicken and snow plow his lot....still has the original engine..approaching 350 K

put in slick 50 at about 25K miles....
yeah...I'll put it in my Av....
 
???I added the slick 50 to my 2000 Z71 and i did get almost 2 mpg better on the highway, the only thing is when i drained it for the next oil change it went back to what it was before i added the slick 50, any way to make it stick?????????????

That's the SECOND report I have seen with that result...

So much for slick 50 "bonding" to the engine parts, huh? ;D

Even if you had to add Slick50 to your oil every oil change, and you changed every 3000 miles, and it improved your mileage from say 16 mpg to 18 mpg...

It would be saving you about 20 gallons of fuel per oil change. I suspect you still come out ahead if you compare the costs.

Obviously the longer you go between oil changes, the more cost effective this becomes (as long as it keeps giving you the +2 mpg benefit).

Maybe the Chief can relate his experience with regard to how often he adds it.
 
:rolleyes: Lar-ss, I just did my first oil change and went back with the dino oil. My mechanic keeps telling me not to put slick 50 in till i get at least 12000 miles to make sure it is broke in good and rings seated. If you put it in to early it can stop rings from seating and cause it to use oil. That is his opinion
I usually use royal purple since i get it from a salesman that we buy all our oil for our rigs from and he gives me a case about every other month. It is good oil and royal purple has a great rep bout like amsoil. Just waiting till i get a few miles before i switch over.

Thanks for the update. Did you have Dino oil in when the Slick 50 helped the mileage? ???

True, putting synth oil in too early WILL delay the rings and seals seating. It would be logical that Slick 50 would cause a similar delay, if it is as "SLICK" as it claims to be. ;D

I have been told by several synth oil experts that usually 5K miles on a new vehicle is good enough for the synth switch, ESPECIALLY if you have a lot of high rpm highway driving, which speeds up the break-in period. (Exception is diesel engines, which take 12K-14K before break-in is over.)

I think 12K is too long to wait for a gas engine like the AV, but only time will tell. You generally get a small mileage increase when the rings and seals are finally SET and the break-in period is over.

I guess each engine, each driving style, and even temperature play into how long the break-in period lasts.

I'm going to switch to Amsoil synth at 4600 miles, which will be 3K after my last dino oil change. We are taking the truck to Texas in early May, and that trip should HASTEN the break-in period - two 14 hour drives !!! :D

OK I added slick 50 the other week since it was on sale ($13) and well I wanted to test it.

My avy has over 10000 miles and have averaged 370 miles a tank until the light comes on. Previous fuel mileage average was 14.2 mpg

Results after 2 full tanks:

440 miles on 26 gallons (16.92 mpg). An improvement of over 70 miles.

470 miles on 27.2 gallons (17.28 mpg). Improvement of 100 miles.

I figured I have increased fuel economy 2 mpg on these first 2 tanks.

Based on fuel costs of 1.20 (presently here). New fuel costs is 7.1 cents per miles versus 8.5 cents per mile prior to slick 50. So after 934 miles the slick 50 will have paid for itself.

I will monitor after changing the oil and see if it keeps up.

 
On previous treatments I did every 50K to 75K - I never experienced a reduction in mileage after changing my oil. Like ygmn I got better and better performance as it's gone. I'm at 5,600 miles now so I'm getting close to oil change number two - that will be a drain and I'm going with synthetic. I'll report what the difference is HOWEVER the results will probably be skewed. Seeing how skiing ends on April 14th I won't be having those 4WD treks up the pass in the snow and ice...
 
Another tank gone by with high speed cruising on Interstate with plenty of wind. Average speed around 80 mph:

439.4 miles
27.2 gallons
= 16.15 mpg average.

I swear one day I will try to drive around the speed limit.

Here are some totals:
262.8 total engine hours
11,159 total miles
= 42.46 mph average speed.
 
With the engine off -

Press and hold in the trip button on the gage cluster.

The hour meter will come up after a few seconds.

If that does not work check the owners manual as I am sure it says something in there better than I said it on how to get it to come up.
