Update On Slick50 Oil Change - MPG Is Up

Now that I'm over 50k miles I added Slick50 to my Syn oil change this weekend. I could immediately tell the difference in the pick up.

As far as increase mpg, that remains to be seen. I'm sure I'll save gas now that winter has sorta started and I won't have my aircon on all the time or at all.

I'm waiting for next fill where I'll also be adding the Techron fuel additive (normally do this with my oil changes, but I was already at full tank).

Without the aircon I'm at around 16.77 mpg with 80% city/20% freeway driving.

We'll see what happens in about a week or so. . .

Well, I'm a LONG TIME Slick 50 user...first bought it in 1986 when it first came out (I think it was '86, and the price was $32 a quart!  :) ) Anyway, I've used it in every vehicle I've owned since then, which is a fair number. I have always installed it after the first oil change somewhere between 2500 and 7000 miles. In my experience:

1. I've never had blow-by, smoky exhaust, or problems with rings sealing
2. I've never had a minor/major engine or oil-related failure
3. My MPG generally increased by 1 to 2 MPG...depended on driving conditions
4. I always refreshed it after 50K miles
5. I always use synthetic oil (typically Mobil 1, but also Castrol Syntec)

I understand there's a lot of folks who think it's akin to snake oil, but that's OK with me...for me, the proof was in the pudding. The Slick 50 folks (and Dura-Lube as well as others) have considerable expense tied up in research, testing, marketing, and liability protection. As it's worked so well for me, and is still a strong presence in the oil additive marketplace, I'll keep using it. Besides, the engine protection warranty that comes with it, though pretty regimented, is a fair bit of insurance for low bucks. For those who haven't had an opportunity to use it, I would recommend it wholeheartedly.

I guess I drive a lot more than any of you. i have an 02 and she has 64k on her already. I just drove to Coarsegold Ca, from Pocatello Idaho this last Christmas (04). I averaged 17.4 with 4 bikes on the back hooked to a hitch bike holder. And all the gear for me the wife and 2 boys. We spent the night in South Tahoe. we filled upin Reno 35 miles before stopping for the night. I then drove all the way to coarsegold on that tank. That is 427miles. I did not fill up until 458. I put in 25.3 gallons, that is 18.1 MPG. I then drove on that tank from Fresno to San Jose and back. When I finally fueled up for the trip home I had got 18.5. now the trip home was a different story. The weather sucked and the wind was bad, so was traffic on the 15 between Barstow and vegas. I had to take the southern route because the weather was to bad to drive thru Reno. I only averaged 16.2 the rest of the trip.
the only mods I have are a K&N Filter and Synthetic Oil. i am also running 265/70/17 BFG All Terrain KO,s. ( Awesome Tire). I was also averaging 80MPH on the interstate and 60 from Reno on.

so whaddya think ygmn?  your sold on that gunk?  i mean it is not stopleak...or crankcase sealant.  i don't think it will damage anything...does it say an active ingredient?  is it a detergent?  you have gone 11,200 miles and it is still giving you an improvement in fuel economy!  you have changed the oil 3 or 4 times...it must work!  there are a lot of different brands of that stuff on the market.  i think i used to use that lube2000 stuff in my old firebird when i was a kid, but i never really collected data like that.  good job.  put another update down.

i am reading all this in the section cause i am about to change oil again.  i have to read the manual,  what is the recommended weight? 5x30mobil1 synthetic is what i see a lot of ppl using, with a mobil1 filter...  do you think slick50 type additives will work better with any different oil weight or effect the truck like that way?

I have a 2500 and live close to the city so avg speed is not real high and rpm usually stay pretty low even in tow mode.  any recommendations for my oil purchase tomorrow?

I used Slick50 in my 1991 Mazda Protege back in 1992 when it had 15,000 miles on it.  I always used plain old dyno oil.

I still have it, it has 147,000 miles on it and never had any engine problems (or any problems with the car as a whole for that matter.  One battery, two sets of brakes, a few sets of tires, and a muffler in almost 17 years.  Not too shabby.)

Of course I always changed my oil on time, so who is to say if I would have had problems if I didn't use it.

I do remember back in 2001 or so getting something in the mail about a class-action distribution against Slick50 for making unsubstantiated claims.

My wife's Honda has 190k on it. I have replaced 1 clutch and 1 set of brakes, a distributor and that is it. I do all the regular maintenance on it. I do not run any thing special except Synthetic oil. I did run some Seafoam thru it which did seem to, along with a CAI, bring the engine more alive. So all in all she has been a wonderful car.

I used it back in 1988 in a Pontiac Sunbird GT turbo. It cost me about $40 bucks for a quart from a distributor that sold it to our Maintenance dept at McDermott for the Diesel engines on the cranes. I never blew the Turbo up like a friend of mine did in his Buick Regal Grand Nationals.  After he put a quart in it, never had a problem with his Turbo.  I did put a quart back in 02 in my Silverado and didn't notice any difference in Gas mileage or performance.  The stuff they have out today is no where near the same as it was back then even so they claim it is, I don't believe it.  Unless I can get a quart from back then, I won't be wasting my money on that new stuff.

Anyone still using "Slick 50"?

I hear a little noise on 1st start up of the day that disappears within 30 seconds. I park uphill and attribute this to the oil draining down at night. I switched to a Napa Gold 1522 filter with the anti-drain valve  to help. I am also currently using a synthetic blend oil, was using Castro plain before. I always use my remote starter in the winter and warm it up before heading off to work. IT was 32 this morning so still gets cold here even though it's April. The problem may go away when  it's warmer, but then it might not. So I'm thinking of getting some Slick 50 or switching to pure synthetic oil. Can I do the switch with 56K miles on her?  ???

I have been running Syn these I bought my Av. I had the piston slap on cold mornings when I would accelerate on a cold engine. So I have learned to let it warm up for about 30 seconds before putting it in gear. Something else that helped was when I changed over to electric fans. The only thing I can contribute that to is less drag on the engine. I can start on a cold engine now and not have th piston slap. From what I understand the 5.3 is known for this isue on cold engines, so as long as you let it warm up for about 30 seconds you should be good.

As for Slick 50, I agree it has changed over the years and I will not use it anymore. I use to swear by it in the 80's, but not anymore. I am however a firm believer in Synthetic oil, and I only use Mobile 1 5w-30.

Does anyone else flush out there drain pan with a fresh qaurt of oil when doing and oil change? I always buy an extra qaurt of oil and when my draining oil is down to just a little bit coming out. I will pour a fresh qaurt of oilin 1/2 quart at a time. I then watch the drain to wait until it is new looking. Then I close the quick valve, put on my filter and fill up the oil pan. When i have checked the level and make sure it is full, usually 6 quarts. I start the Av for about 1 minute so the filter can get full. Then I check the level again and top it off. I have yet to see a oil shop do the same.

But that is just my opinion.

Thanks guys, good tips. I will use synthetic oil on the next go around.  (y)

I guess it did not save enough..Chief got rid of his AV  :D

That would be like cutting off my right arm.
