I asked Shane about gas stops on our route... All of our stops are mapped out.

Todd

Shane, I believe the Vegas group is going to leave on Saturday morning around 7-8 am and plan on staying somewhere around Salt Lake on Saturday night. Not sure who we can hookup with.

Flint 4x4 are you going to head back to Michigan at all on Saturday after the GTG? I'd like to travel back with someone but I start my new job Monday and don't want to get back to late on Sunday.

From my home to Rapid City is about 14 hrs.  I plan on driving 2 days.  The halfway point for me is Albert Lea, MN.  I already made hotel reservations in Albert Lea.  My family and I will be leaving on Sat morning (7-21) and staying overnight.  Anyone else planning on staying overnight in Albert Lea on Sat?  Maybe a dinner GTG?

I have not made the final location on where I am staying.  Albert Lea is on my short list.  I am guessing you are taking the I80/I90 route.

Flint, when you are ready to start planning this trip. i can tell you where the best gas stops are along the way This is very important once you cross the Mississippi. The stops are few and far between. The farther west you go the longer the distance between stops. I have made the trip from Milwaukee to Pocatello atleast 8 times. So I know it very well. I have taken the 90 drive 7 times and 80 once.
So if you want the help I will be glad to give you my input.
I'll be coming from just outside of Chicago on the I90 route also.? If you can pass along the gas stops info, I'd appreciate it.

I would get gas at La Cross WI and Sioux Falls SD. This is going on 15mpg and filling up at about 1/4.

Shane
Noted, Thanks.

I see that as a good stopping point for me as well.

We are staying at the Comfort Inn in Albert Lea.  Hopefully we will be arriving in the late afternoon.  Depending on what time you arrive...maybe a dinner GTG if you are interested.

HERE is the final route the Cali gang is taking...

See ya all there... (y)

Cliff i just looked at map is the route you are taking faster than staying on I25 towards  Ammon, Wy. then Hwy 18 to Hwy 79 to Rapid City. That is the route my map program is taking me just wondering. You route has better roads but looks longer??

Robby,
There were 3 factors I took into account...

Quality of roads
Enroute speed differential and time saved (if any) by staying on Interstate
Other folks on vacation and their use of conflicting roads

So...I did not want to select too many Wyoming Highways, especially those that are "connectors" to areas we will be visiting while in Rapid City.  I figure that this time of year there will be a ton of folks on vacation and visiting those areas that are in proximity to Rapid City...

I am waiting on information from a member on the use of Wyoming Highways 387 and 59 which "cut a corner" off of I-25 to Buffalo and I-90

The time appears to be about a 4 minute difference yet a savings of 53 miles (almost a draw)...

So anyway I figure that the "South Entry" Highways are going to be routes to avoid on a Saturday...don't want to get "locked" in with a bunch of tour buses/rubber neckers... even though we will become the very same a few days later... :p

I finally caught up with unread messages.  I am planning on an early leave tomorrow morning.

If you are coming across I80 thru Wyoming, take 287 out of Rawlings. That is a 70mph highway for the most part. It will also drop you off in Casper. If you then take I25 north to I90 it will be a better drive because it is not stop and go.

Just want to say THANK YOU Shanes 02 Avalanche

Your map was right on the money? (y) I might be bugging you more often

Thank you, I am always available to map out any trip. It is a hobby to me and something I enjoy doing. Oh and evidently I am pretty good at it.

Glad you had a great time.
