The Black Hills and Rapid City area offers a woodsy, high-elevation environment where the nights are cool, there are few mosquitoes, and there are no wild bears at all. Both the SD Vacation Guide and the South Dakota Campground Guide publications describe area campgrounds, and are free.

From fly fishing to ice fishing, the fishing season never closes in South Dakota, which makes the pursuit of trout a year round sport. The Black Hills are home to 14 mountain lakes and more than 300 miles of meandering streams containing brook, brown and rainbow trout. On the surrounding prairie, reservoirs and ranch stock dams also provide angling fun, more than 50,000 stock dams brimming with largemouth bass, northern pike and a variety of panfish.

The best fishing waters are located at; Deerfield Reservoir and Pactola Reservoir; Stockade Lake, Sheridan Lake, Rapid Creek, French Creek, Spearfish Creek, Spring Creek and Castle Creek. Most waters are stocked, but in about half, wild trout thrive. Rainbow trout are the most abundant fish in the Black Hills.

Current Nonresident South Dakota Fishing License Cost:
1-Day Fishing $14
3-Day Fishing $32
They can be purchased online or in person.

`Took this trip in lthe summer of 03. I really enjoyed it.

On the way back I went well out of the way up to Glacier park from the Devil's tower and then the Yellowstone/Teton tour.

I packed on about 4500 miles on that trip.

Is there anywhere to go for a good long horseback ride out there???  Not some cheesey little too-monitored line, but a real ride... ???

You can really appreciate South Dakota from the back of a good saddle horse. About a dozen trail ride outfits and guest ranches offer one hour, two hour and half-day rides for about $10-$15 an hour. For longer rides and more freedom.. Click here for more information.

I updated the schedule with sign-in information.

There are several places within Badlands National Park were scenes from Dances With Wolves were filmed.  Badlands is an amazing park with improved and unimproved roads.  Several destinations within the park recommend high clearance and 4WD to access - but this is "National Park" standards and they set the bar pretty low on recommending 4WD.  To really appreciate Devil's Tower one should take the outer loop trail, about 3.8 miles.

Thanks for the input Chief. You are correct, the outer loop trail is the only way to go. The photo ops in the Badlands and at Devil's Tower are amazing to say the least!
